Great Southern Griffins

Congratulations, Tom!
Our very own Griffins Chair was named a finalist in the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (Great Southern) Mike Stidwell Volunteer of the Year Award. The presentation, a highlight of National Volunteer Week, was held earlier this week at the Albany Entertainment Centre.
While Tom has contributed to sport development in our region for many years, this nomination recognises his passion and dedication to growing the Griffins Sport Club and the Great Southern Academy of Sport in recent years. We are incredibly grateful for the commitment, care and leadership he brings. Thank you, Tom, for everything you do for the Griffins community.
This year’s Mike Stidwell Medal was awarded to Darren Berry, recognising his outstanding, decades-long contribution to basketball across the Albany and Karratha regions, including his efforts to bring State Basketball League matches back to Albany in/from 2025. Congratulations, Darren!

Griffins Volleyball
The volleyball season has kicked off with great energy and enthusiasm across all teams. Well done to everyone for such a strong start, and a special thank you to our Team Managers for their fantastic efforts in getting everyone registered, set up on our new app, and to trainings and games on time.
Our Year Eight team is currently looking for one more player to join their team, so if you’re keen to get involved, we’d love to hear from you via volleyball@griffins.org.au. Games are on a Tuesday after school (ALAC) and training at 4.00pm on a Monday at GSG.

Griffins Hockey
Griffins Hockey has enjoyed another strong week on the field, with several teams recording great results and showing excellent teamwork and sportsmanship.
Our 7/8/9 Girls played a fantastic game against Bethel, finishing with a convincing win. The team showed great enthusiasm and effort, with plenty of smiles, and some very tired faces at the end of the match.
The Under-18s Red Girls also had an impressive performance against Spencer Park. Despite being short a few players, including their regular goalie, the team rose to the challenge. Younger players stepped up brilliantly, helping secure a well-earned 4–1 victory.
Men’s B came away with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Manypeaks on Wednesday night. The team is now looking forward to this week’s Men’s B derby, where Red will take on Blue in what promises to be an exciting match.
Please save the date for the Griffins Club Day on 29 August 2026. We will be seeking donations of food and volunteers to assist with running the canteen throughout the day.
