Twilight Concert

On Thursday evening, the Senior Strings, Pipe Band, Jazz Band, Guitar Ensemble, Concert Band, and four Years Seven to Ten rock bands performed to a packed audience at the Twilight Concert in the gym.

Our performers and supportive audience enjoyed pizza while listening to music ranging from famous operatic and tango pieces by the Senior Strings, to jazz classics with improvised solos from the Jazz Band. The Guitar Ensemble performed a clever arrangement by their new ensemble director, Mr Lockie Pannell, of a well-known video game tune.

The Years Seven to Ten rock bands have all named themselves this year, and the larger ensembles were interspersed with rock performances. Copper Lad performed Sugar, We’re Goin Down by Fall Out Boy, Four Day Weekend played Tangerine by Ocean Alley, and The Groove Seekers gave an unforgettable version of House of the Rising Sun, with Gus Andrew bringing down the house. Midnight Icon showcased their talents with Man I Need by Olivia Dean.

The Pipe Band played the classic Highland Cathedral, with solos by Edmund Toomey and Harry Perkins, and the Concert Band delivered a polished performance of Midnight Escape to conclude an enjoyable evening.

Many thanks to our supportive audience and to all our young performers for their energy and enthusiasm.

Service Awareness and Experience Program

As part of the Year Seven Service Awareness and Experience Program, Mr Brett Tompkin, a former GSG Year Nine Coordinator and teacher, and now Emergency Management Mitigation Coordinator at the City of Albany, brought his fire truck and plenty of excitement to school during his presentation on volunteering with the Fire Brigade.

Year Seven students had the opportunity to dress in fire brigade uniforms, learn how to use fire extinguishers to put out (controlled!) fires, and operate the powerful hoses from the back of the truck. Mr Fowler also fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter!

A huge thank you to Mr Tompkin for sharing his knowledge and his truck with our Year Seven students. We may well see some of these students volunteering with the brigade in the future.

World's Greatest Shave

We are proud to be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave on Wednesday 3 June at 1.15pm in the Gym. Year Twelve students, along with teachers and the Principal, are coming together to shave or cut their hair to raise funds and awareness for those affected by blood cancer. This is a student-led event organised by Community and Service Captains – Charlie Hill and Nyomi Johnson. Every donation counts – support the cause here: https://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/fundraisers/GreatSouthernGrammar2026
