TENNIS TOURNAMENT

We held a Year 9 Tennis tournament in my year 9 Class. These two Sasha Levine and Oliver Riley made the final.

Oliver fought back from 4-2 down against Sasha to take the W! The game was played with great spirit and outstanding sportsmanship by both students as they applauded each others great shots throughout the game. So great to see!

Intermediate Girls Cricket Round Robin

Overall the girls were so impressive. It was a long day. Four games from 9:30 until 3:30 and they were trying just as hard at the end as at the beginning.

Unfortunately Beaumaris’s link with the MCC is bearing pretty impressive fruit! We played them first and kept them to 9 an over in an 8 over innings, including a batter who had scored 100 in their Premier 2’s the day before. When we batted I said “see the openers off and score heavily off the lesser bowlers”. Well, the openers were replaced by a six foot bowler who bowled heat! Grace still has the bruise on her leg to prove it. We only lost a couple of wickets but scoring was difficult and we ended up with about 11.

Equipment is an issue because premier cricketers even at that level use $1000 bats which “ping” the ball off to the boundary.

After this game we mixed it up to give everyone a go and after a couple of close losses to MCK and Mordialloc we managed to beat Bentleigh when, scores level, Lily Boersma was bowled by a full toss that was pitched higher than her hips. “No Ball” I shouted from Square Leg, thereby winning us the game with the one run from the no-ball.

Team highlights:

Megan Medland was great all day - bowled accurately and increased her pace throughout the day. Batted well too although her school helmet kept falling over her eyes every minute.

Grace Bonanno bowled beautifully and was one of the only ones to really play some attacking shots and use her feet well.

Our captain Abi McCarroll celebrated her appointment to School Council by being just fantastic all-round. Her running between wickets was brave and daring. She took over wicket-keeping and kept everyone entertained, especially opposition batters, with her banter. Her apologies when she threw the ball at the batter’s foot were hilarious.

Lily McEniry was a constant positive influence in the field and kept everyone amused with her chat. She kept and batted really well.

Annellie Curtain bowled really consistently and fielded really well. We relied on her for line and length and she never let us down.

Madi Stewart was great and was able to stay in for long periods of time.

Clover Lazzaro bowled fast and straight and took an exceptional catch at backward square leg.

Emma Goudie and Alice Devilliers, who both play cricket for Elsternwick, fielded brilliantly. Emma batted well and Alice bowled well.

Lily Boersma had a nice partnership with Abi in which they ran between wickets really well and put pressure on the fielders.

Phoebe bowled a couple of nice overs once we tweaked her aggression switch. She’s a natural sports player and the adjustment from softball worked better for her bowling than her batting.

Filia and Juliette were great team members and will have gained much confidence for next year.

The girls worked together really well and helped and praised each other at all times. Very privileged to have spent the day with these impressive students.
