We have an exciting and engaging term ahead, with a strong focus on building student independence, deepening understanding, and preparing students for the second half of the year. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning across the term.

Literacy Block

Writing

Students will explore the exciting world of science fiction. They will learn about the key features of sci-fi texts, including futuristic settings and imaginative ideas, and develop their understanding of characters such as protagonists and antagonists. Students will plan, draft, edit, and publish their own science fiction narratives, moving through the full writing process from an initial cold write through to a polished final piece that they will share.

Reading

Students will be studying the science fiction novel Masterminds, by Gordon Korman. Throughout the term, students will make predictions, explore different points of view, and analyse themes, symbolism, and character development. They will also examine how authors build suspense and tension, and identify key moments such as plot twists, climax, and resolution. The unit will conclude with a creative response and book review.

Mathematics

Students will cover a broad range of number concepts, with a focus on building both fluency and understanding. Topics will include addition and subtraction (with regrouping and renaming), multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, and place value, including reading and writing large numbers. Students will also explore units of measurement, particularly within the metric system. Daily review sessions will support students in strengthening their core skills and confidence.

Humanities

Our humanities unit this term focuses on History, specifically Australia as a nation.

Students will investigate Federation and how Australia became a nation, as well as migration, including push and pull factors and migrant experiences. They will explore significant historical events such as the Stolen Generations and the development of voting rights, and examine the growth of democracy and citizenship, including the rights of women and children. There may also be an opportunity for an excursion to the Immigration Museum or participation in a cultural experience with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

RRRR & Talking the Talk

Students will continue to participate in the Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program and Talking the Talk sessions (starting from Monday 11 May), focusing on goal setting, communication skills, building positive relationships, and personal, health and social development.

Upcoming Assessments & Events

Throughout the term, students will complete a range of assessments to track their progress. This will include pre- and post-assessments in mathematics, writing assessments (such as the initial cold write and final published piece), reading assessments, and ongoing literacy tracking through DIBELS.

There are several important dates to note this term.

Somers Camp will run from April 28 to May 6.
Mother’s Day & Special Person's Breakfast will be held on Friday 8 May.
District Cross Country (for Years 3 – 6) on Thursday 14 May.
Curriculum Day on Friday 29 May.
King’s Birthday public holiday on Monday 8 June.

Term two is a busy and rewarding time for our Year 6 students. We encourage families to support regular reading at home, discuss learning topics with their children, and stay engaged with upcoming events and key dates. Specialist Subjects

Performing Arts

Students will be reviewing how to play basic chords on the keyboard. They will then move on to performing music in a small group on an instrument of their choice before exploring layering and textures using GarageBand. Towards the end of the term, students will review their drama skills and prepare an audition piece for this years’ 5 & 6 musical.

Physical Education

Students will continue to refine and modify movement skills that are used in track and field. While practising students will apply their knowledge of movement concepts to improve their techniques in shot put and discus as well as hurdles and high jump.

Science

Students are continuing with their work on the states of matter, looking at how changes to substances may be reversible or irreversible.

Visual Arts

Students will examine Vincent Namatjira’s Self Portrait (2022) as an inspiration to create an artwork in which the background is of Albert Namatjira's landscape with ghost gums, overlaid with an outlined self-portrait in pastel.

They will also work with graphic designer, Claire McNamee, as part of the design team for the ART FOR ALL 2026 t-shirt.
