Term Four News

Welcome to Term Four!

Grade 6 students had an excellent term three and should be incredibly proud of all they achieved. They took on a number of opportunities to demonstrate their leadership, creativity and teamwork across the school. Students led the school in the ART FOR ALL activities, represented Fairfield Primary in interschool sports, produced thoughtful and engaging memoirs, and worked together to plan and run an Amazing Race experience for our Grade 3 students. It was fantastic to see the students step up, take responsibility and demonstrate the maturity and leadership that we have been working towards throughout the year.

It is hard to believe that we are already entering the final term of the year. Term four is an exciting and important time for our Grade 6 students as they consolidate their learning, prepare for secondary school, and celebrate the many achievements and experiences of their final year at Fairfield Primary.

Reading

Students will continue to develop their ability to respond critically and thoughtfully to a range of digital texts.

  • We will begin the term by studying The Final Quarter, a documentary exploring the experiences of Australian footballer Adam Goodes and the racism and public debate surrounding his career.
  • Students will develop their ability to identify evidence, consider different perspectives, and discuss how texts can communicate ideas and influence an audience.
  • We will also complete a film study of Holes, exploring characters, themes, plot and the choices made by authors and filmmakers.

Writing

Students will explore script writing through creating an original podcast. Students will develop their ability to communicate ideas clearly, structure information effectively, and make deliberate language choices. They will utilise music, sound effects and voice to engage their listener.

Numeracy

Students will continue to build knowledge in algebra by looking at continuing and generalising patterns and identifying the unknown value in equations. Students will also explore statistics, investigating different types of data and how the media uses statistics.

In the later part of the term, students will explore time, where they will develop their knowledge of interpreting timetables in readiness for high school transition.

Design & Technology

This term, students will also engage in a Design and Technologies unit focusing on food and fibre production. Students will explore how food and fibre are produced and consider the processes, materials and technologies involved.

Homework Matrix

To support students in their transition to secondary school, optional homework opportunities are provided to encourage positive study habits.

These activities are organised on a Homework Matrix, allowing students to choose tasks that align with their interests and family circumstances.

Upcoming Events

There are many exciting events taking place throughout the term.

  • A podcast incursion is scheduled for Wednesday 7 October.
  • Year 5 & 6 Concert with evening performances on Tuesday 20 & Wednesday 21 October.
  • Government high school transition day on Tuesday 8 December.
  • Junior Sports Day on Friday 11 December (organised by Year 6 students).
  • Graduation Ceremony and celebration dinner on Tuesday 15th December.
  • Year 6 fun day on Thursday 17th December.

Term 4 is always a memorable term for our Grade 6 students. While there is still plenty of learning to be done, we are also looking forward to celebrating the friendships, growth, resilience and achievements of the students throughout their final term at Fairfield Primary School.

Specialist Subjects

Performing Arts

The first few weeks of term will be spent preparing for the 5/6 musical, The Wizard of Oz. After reflecting on our performance, Grade 6 students will review their composition skills on GarageBand and finish their year by preparing a musical item for graduation.

Physical Education

At the start of each lesson this term we will be warming up using skipping ropes. Students will be challenged to perform a combination of footwork tricks as well as rope control tricks, such as crossovers, side swings and wraps. Students will have a chance to play some sports they have not participated in before as well as revisit some of their favourite games of primary school.

Science

Continuing on from last term’s learning covering Physical Science, students are moving on from electrical energy to focusing on light energy. They will explore how light can be produced by many different sources. Students will investigate how light travels in straight lines, forms shadows, and can be absorbed, transmitted, reflected or refracted when it interacts with different materials.

Visual Arts

Our Hero’s Gallery at ART FOR ALL proved to be so inspirational. I hope you had an opportunity to see your artist’s work proudly exhibited beside Vincent Namatjira’s.

This term students will continue to work on their Hermannsburg Potters’ inspired clay pot, completing the lid adorned with an Australian creature. They will expand their knowledge of textile art by revising their understandings of hand sewing. They will cut, stuff, stitch and dress a personal bear. Students will also contribute to their Grade 6 appreciation gift.

French

Students will be reflecting on their time at FPS by writing a passage addressed to their younger selves, sharing memories and experiences from their primary school years. They will use the passé composé to describe what they have done and explore ideas from different areas of school life, including subjects, activities and memorable experiences.

This project will support students in consolidating their understanding of past-tense structures while developing their French writing skills and ability to communicate personal experiences.

We look forward to celebrating the final term of primary school!
