Literacy and Numeracy

Denholm Pickering (Literacy and Numeracy Leader)

Literacy

As we kick off 2022, our focus is on providing a curriculum that sets our students up for success, whatever path they choose. As a means of reading and writing for understanding, literacy is one of the foundational building blocks which underpins our focus.

In 2022 we are intending on embedding modern, evidence-based literacy practices into our lessons and planning.

In addition, the Advance and MYLNS literacy support programs are being refined to better provide tailored intervention for individual students' needs. We have a new team of experienced and exuberant literacy teachers who are excited to take on this challenge.

Numeracy

Numeracy is another foundational building block underpinning our curricula, but for the way that students understand Maths.

This year we will work within specific domains, starting with our VCAL program, to ensure that students are provided with the requisite support they need to ensure they have the opportunity to succeed whatever their interest.

The MYLNS program for targeted numeracy support is again running, with experienced teachers providing in-classroom support.

I'd like to finish by acknowledging the community of Sandringham and the role you play in the College. Last year a survey was conducted of parents about literacy and numeracy; due to some of that feedback we have re-organised our programs for this year and in some cases have even found better resources and ways of connecting with the wonderful young people we have at our school.
