Have you ever tried to write an article for a school newsletter and have nothing come to mind? I mean, literally nothing. It was June 2021 when Italian artist, Salvador Garau (a brilliant name for an artist) created an invisible statue, a certain type of 5ft x 5ft nothing that he later sold for $18,000. The piece, called lo sono (Italian for ‘I am’) simply found a way to speak to people. Perhaps at a moment when the world was facing more time alone, lo sono offered a perspective of that nothingness that other, perhaps more tangible art, could not.
Now before I get the class of 2022 all coming in to tell me that they have finished their invisible artworks and submitted their gaseous English essays, it is important to remember that Art like, lo sono, is all about that message. Art speaks to us. Great art sings.
Art in and of itself is not just paint and pen; it is anything that we have a passion for. The art of mathematics, martial arts, poetry, app creation; structural elucidation; anything that we drive from the heart I would consider art.
As a senior school student, you are starting to narrow in on the content that you want to learn, the things that drive you. Use that drive during the harder times to come. We are all here for you. We share many of your passions and really do want you to do well.
Now go – make great art.

Last week, Sandringham College Year 11 Student Leader, Maja Dixon, won the 'Zone' level of the Lions Youth of the Year competition. Maja will soon be competing at 'District' level and we wish her all the very best.
The Lions Youth of the Year program has a proud history in encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australian students approaching the end of their high school years.
By emphasising qualities like academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, public speaking and contribution to the community, Youth of the Year aims to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians. Read more about the Lions Club Youth of the Year Program here.
Study has never looked so good. Study/Homework club will be starting up again in March. Great alumni joining this A-grade tutoring team. Mondays and Wednesdays in the Holloway Road library. People new to the study club will find a collection of familiar faces as our recent alumni come back as paid tutors to assist with anything from linear algebra to those Women of Troy. It is a great way to kick off your week of effective study or to just get some of that undone homework finally off your to do list. See you there.
Students in Year 12 are expected to sit assessment tasks at the scheduled day and time. Students who do not attend a SAC are required to provide a Medical Certificate.
Students experiencing COVID symptoms are expected to complete an RA test on the evening prior or the morning prior to attending school.

The social event of the Year 11 calendar is set for Saturday 19 March at Sandy by the Bay. If other years celebrations are to go by, it promises to be a great night. It is an opportunity to dress up and get down as we have a 2 course meal, a gorgeous sunset over the bay (hopefully) and DJ Connor ready to play all of the classics like Sweet Caroline and Dancing Queen. To be honest, I rarely recognise any of the songs played - it is, however, always a full dance floor
The 2022 Year 12 formal will be held on Sat 6 April overlooking the finish line at Caulfield racecourse. A fitting venue as our year 12's take the turn into the home straight of their secondary education. Keep an eye on compass news for ticket sales and function details.
