Name: Nigel Toussaint

My wife Rachel and I have one boy at MPW, Archie, aged 9, (Grade 4 with Kim Satchell). We also have a daughter Abby, aged 14, and another son, Lachlan, age 12, who attended MPW from Prep through to Grade 6 and who are now at secondary school (Years 9 and 7 respectively this year). This is my 4th year on School Council, and also on the Environment Committee, and I have appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the School Community through this involvement.

My favourite things about MPW

I love that the education program at MPW is extremely well-rounded and focused on providing real world learning with an adaptive and flexible approach that is child-centred. I also love the sense of inclusiveness of the school community and amazing dedication by the staff to student learning and well-being.

School Council Meeting Report

The June School Council Meeting was held on Monday 22 June. The following was discussed:

  • The 2019 Annual Report to the School Community was endorsed. This will be communicated to the community through a number of channels including the Newsletter, Compass and the school’s Annual General Meeting.
  • School Council reviewed its previous motion to postpone all school camps. The following was considered:
    • Current COVID19 spike.
    • Guidelines from DET still unavailable.
    • Travelling on buses.
    • Staff quarters and social distancing issues.
    • MVIMP camp involves students from 4 different schools.
    • ‘Wait and see’ approach leaves families and staff anxious.
    • Deposits can be recovered.
    • Refunds possible for monies already paid.
  • After discussion, School Council endorsed its previous stance of no School Camps for 2020.
  • School Council members will use a Self-Assessment Tool to provide feedback and recommendations for further Professional Learning.
  • Kerri will be mentoring an Intern from another school in Term 3.
  • Enrolments have been a focus with a virtual school tour available on the website and virtual Q&As being held over the last 2 weeks. All questions and responses will be collated and placed on the school website.
  • An information/open day for prospective 2021 parents will be planned in Term 3.
  • Some Parent School Contributions are outstanding (47% paid in full). Reminders to families will be sent out.
  • A virtual Trivia Night has been proposed. Providers are currently being sourced. This is an important community event, particularly in these isolating times. School Council has requested dates to be sourced.
  • The Capital Works final inspection (toilets) was completed last week. This has been signed off.
  • School Council approved the investigation into the opportunity of a Capital Works grant.
  • The COVID19 Return to Work Policy was endorsed by School Council as was the newly developed school Vision and Purpose Statement.
  • A Volunteers Handbook has been completed for School Council feedback.

Community Engagement Sub Committee

I’ve been a proud MPW parent for 10 years and joined this group last year because I wanted to support the school, our students and our wonderful parent community. It’s a common theme you hear from everyone involved at MPW: “we have a great community”!

The Community Engagement sub committee meets twice a term, after school for about 45 minutes.  Our aims are to foster engagement with our parents,  work on building & strengthening our connections to the local community and support our school.

If you’ve got a couple of hours to spare per term, this is a great informal way to make a difference and have some input to how our school communicates with the community.  All bright ideas are welcome, and it’s not too late to join us for this year!
