Werribee Zoo Excursion

On Monday the 9th of May, the Foundation students went on an excursion to Werribee Zoo with their Year 6 Buddies. We had a fantastic day seeing lots of different animals and we especially enjoyed going on the Safari Tour where we got up close to the zebras and giraffes. The Foundation and Year 6 students loved spending the day together and getting to share this experience with their buddy.

Foundation Mini Community

The Foundation playroom has had a transformation! The Foundation students have been learning about all of the different places in our local community and they have brought this to life by turning the playroom into a mini community. We first discussed different places in our local area that are important and drew pictures of how we could make some of these places. Within our Foundation Mini Community we have a park and a beach, a very busy hairdresser, a police station, a home and a toy shop. Students have thought carefully about what we need in each of these places and they have visited each location, taking it in turns to get their hair done, answer the police phones, post letters, sell toys and build sand castles.

Junior School Local Walk

In the Junior School we are learning about our community and the different places that we can find in our local area. To explore this first hand, we went on a local walk to the beach and explored what we could see in our community. We saw houses, cafes, the beach, a playground, roads and churches. We also looked at The Barraimal (Emu) on the Bayside Indegenous Trail and discussed the Indegenous connection to our land. The Foundation students were also lucky enough to spot an ambulance on their walk back to school and the paramedics turned on their siren and gave us a wave. This walk was a great way for the Junior School to see our local community and make connections to the learning that we are doing in our Inquiry Unit.

Junior School Incursion with Uncle Ian Hunter

Last Friday, the Junior school had an incursion with Uncle Ian Hunter, a Wurrundjeri elder from Indigenous Bayside. Uncle Ian shared pictures of his family and explained his Aborginal heritage, showed us traditional instruments, clothing and objects that Indigenous Australians use and taught us how to make a boomerang from cardboard. Uncle Ian also explained the importance of music and dance and we learnt how to do some steps whilst making music with sticks. Uncle Ian’s stories were so engaging and he taught us about the significance of country and how Indigenous Australians use the land.

Maths Card Game -Subtraction War!

1,2,3,4, Let’s Play Subtraction War!

During the week, Year 3/ 4B learnt and played the Maths card game named ‘Subtraction War’.

The game is fun and played between two players. Before long, challenging subtraction maths facts become part of their mathematical skill set. Besides strengthening subtraction skills, this game also provides practice in comparing numbers.

It was lots of fun and great to see the children developing their maths subtraction skills as well as being quite competitive.

The Human Knot

This term in Year 6 we are working on teamwork and leadership. Specifically communication. This includes not only the way we speak to others, but how we listen and respond. We gave ourselves the challenge of the ‘Human Knot’.

This challenge involves team members forming a circle, grabbing random teammates’ hands, and untangling themselves without breaking their hold. To do so, participants may duck, twist and turn, squeeze through gaps in legs and elbows, step and jump. We did this in a few different steps. Firstly in small groups and verbally communication was not allowed. As we added extra difficulties and people, verbal communication was introduced.

As the task again got more difficult we split into 2 groups. There were no restrictions on how we communicated. Only one group made it out of the human knot. After we were able to reflect on why we think one group was successful and the other was not. We looked at how one group was loud, talking over each other and not listening to each other. Whereas the other group were calm and took turns of giving their opinion and everyone had a voice. We look forward to trying again and getting both teams out of the human knot.
