School Council

School Council member feature

Name: Nigel Toussaint

My wife Rachel and I have two boys at MPW, Lachlan, aged 11, (Grade 6 with Fiona McKenzie) and Archie, aged 8, (Grade 3 with Kim Satchell). We also have a daughter Abby, aged 13, who attended MPW from Prep to Grade 6 and who is now at a secondary school (Year 8 this year).

My favourite thing about MPW

I love that the education program at MPW is extremely well-rounded and focused on providing real world learning with an adaptive and flexible approach that is child-centred. I also love the sense of inclusiveness of the school community and amazing dedication by the staff to student learning and well-being.

Name: Kerri Simpson

Born in and educated in Stawell, with a HSC year at University High School.  My mother and father owned businesses in the town and my mother was Mayor twice.  Our family is strongly linked to the Stawell Gift with the Earle family giving the medal to the gift winner.  I have an older brother and sister. My brother was an athlete in the 1964 Olympics at Tokyo, my sister is a psychologist amongst other qualifications.

I completed my teacher training (Diploma) in Bendigo.  First school Wembley PS, Wembley Ave Spotswood.  Had a year on Physical Education Branch, then returned to Wembley.  Completed my Bachelor of Education in the middle 1980’s and completed a Masters in Literacy in the 2008.

Married my childhood sweetheart Anthony and we have two children (boys). Both Anthony and I work in education.  He is a trained secondary Maths/Science teacher. He has also been a Principal and now is a Senior Education Improvement Officer.  We have always worked in the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.

Moonee Ponds West (Acting) is my fifth sojourn into the principalship.  In each of the schools I have had at least 5-7 years.  In between Findon PS and my current substantive position, I had 7 years as a Regional Network Leader where I worked across 20+ schools (primary, secondary, special and alternative settings) supporting and nurturing school improvement.

My favourite thing about MPW

It is a joy to be at Moonee Ponds West PS as I have seen some wonderful pedagogical practices that I have taken to other schools during my years as a teacher and leader. The students at this school are very ‘able’ and our challenge as educators continues to be to extend their learning and knowledge.

Our future is about continuing to strengthen the learning for all students so that it is cool to be smart and give effort to achieve your personal best.  In order for this to occur we as a community must build collective responsibility together (with staff and community) so that we can focus on the ‘right work’ every day of every month of every year.   It’s an exciting journey which I hope all will be a part.
