Foundation

What a busy start to the year we have had in Foundation! We have welcomed our students to their first year of schooling and supported them in settling into school routines. We have been learning positive behaviour choices and earning tokens through our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program. The students have enjoyed playing outside on our adventure playground and making new friends.

We have started learning letter names and sounds, beginning with ‘m’ and ‘a’. We will be learning two new letter sounds each week and encourage our Foundation families to review letter names and sounds at home. In Writing, we have been working hard to practise writing our names, using uppercase and lowercase letters. The students have been learning the difference between letters, words and sentences and beginning to co-construct sentences with their teacher and peers. This week the students will begin recount writing by constructing a sentence about something they did on the weekend.

In Mathematics, we have been practising our number formation and counting with one-to-one correspondence. We love listening to songs to help us with our number formation and counting all the way to 100! It has been wonderful to see our students’ enthusiasm and engagement with mathematics, especially when using hands on materials such as play dough and linking cubes.

Our Inquiry focus this term has been Biological Science. The students have been learning about living and non-living things. Earlier in the term the students had to complete a picture sort and determine whether something was living or non-living and we discussed why something is classified as ‘living’.

We would like to thank all of our Foundation families for their support in settling the students into school this term. It has been wonderful to see the students reading every day with their family and completing home learning tasks. Please do not hesitate to get into contact with your child’s teacher either in person or via Compass if you have any queries or questions.

Visual Art with Mrs Steckyj

Welcome back to Art in 2021! It has been so lovely getting to know the students in their new classes. They have all started the year off well and begun learning many fabulous art concepts and techniques, such as value, texture, collage, oil pastel blending and oil pastel resist painting. Our artworks have been inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, Jonas Woods, and Georgia O’Keef. We have used bright, bold colours and colour theory to create wonderful masterpieces that many have mounted on cover papers to enhance their impact on an audience. Every day students from F to 6 have made me smile with pride at the dedication, enthusiasm and imagination that they exhibit with their artworks. I hope they are sharing with you the wonderful skills they have been learning.

LOTE Auslan with Ms Lee

It has been amazing to see everyone back at school in Term 1. In LOTE Auslan we have had a great start to the year with the different year levels learning so many different signs! Students in Foundation have been learning greetings and colours, and are focusing on keeping their signs in their signing space, or ‘sign bubble’. Students in Years 1 to 4 are learning signs for different animals including farm animals, pets, birds, reptiles, ocean creatures and native Australian animals, as well as how to describe them using colours or simple adjectives. Students in Years 5 and 6 have been working in establishing and consolidating signing that is used for general chit chat, such as introducing themselves and asking simple questions. Students have also completed bilingual Auslan and English worksheets, that described their likes, dislikes, family and hobbies. Students in each year level are working hard to increase speed and recall when fingerspelling their names and simple words. Keep up the super signing! - Ms Lee

Physical Education with Mr Ziebell

Physical Education so far this term at Clyde PS has been all about fundamental movement skills, with students focusing on improving their skills in running, jumping, dodging and skipping in the junior years and athletics in years three to six. For the last three weeks of term students will work on improving their object control skills in soccer. Well done to Harlan in 5/6C for his third place in freestyle at divisional swimming, an excellent result at a high level of competition.—Mr Ziebell

STEM with Ms Forester

This term in STEM, the focus is on Science! The Foundations have been describing clothes and exploring what we wear in hot and cold weather while the Year 1s have been investigating the different materials used for clothes and why they might be used for different things. The Year 2s researched traditional clothes from other countries and had fun playing with some toys while we examined what they were made from. The Year 3s, Year 4s and the Year 5/6s have been exploring solids, liquids and gases and how heating and cooling affect them. We’ve been doing some cool experiments using chocolate while making a hypothesis about what might happen! - Ms Forester

Music with Mr Schubert

It has been a pleasure to step into the role of Clyde Primary School’s Music Teacher. Upper year levels have been learning to read and notate 4/4 rhythms while the younger ones become familiar with moving to music and representing what they hear through their bodies. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone a little better and seeing what fantastic musical skills you all have! – Mr Schubert.
