Dear Bundoora families,

Student Leadership Speeches

This week I had the pleasure of listening to our year five and several of our year four students give leadership speeches with the hope of becoming a student leader in 2023.

I was highly impressed with the calibre of speeches from all students this year. It will be difficult to make our choices this year!

Thank you to Mrs Newell for working with senior students on public speaking, and to Mr Meagher and Mrs Agar who have worked with the year 4 and year 5 students to prepare their leadership speeches and to define what student leadership means.

The next step in our student leadership process is a short interview for any student who has expressed a desire to be a school captain or vice-captain. These interviews will take place on the 30th of November and 1st of December. Each student will sit with a panel that includes the principal, assistant principal and the 2022 school captains.

We wish all our students aiming for leadership well.

Colour Run

What a fantastic afternoon we had yesterday at our colour run. Thank you and congratulations to all the parents and friends and all who contributed or volunteered to make this event such a fun experience for the students. Stay tuned next issue for all the wonderful photos that captured some of the fun.

World Hunger Night

Congratulations to the Social Enterprise Team for a wonderful night. The atmosphere on the night was wonderful with smiling faces and lots of fun. The team was very successful in informing our community of the challenges other people face daily. Congratulations also to our many winners of the silent Auction items that were kindly donated by the local community.

Last Day of term four

A reminder that the last day for term four is on Monday November 19th.

Finishing time on this day will be 3:15 pm, with a last day assembly to be held at 2:45 pm.

At the final assembly we will be farewelling our year six students for the last time. All parents and carers are welcome to attend this important assembly.

Planning for 2023

I am currently creating our staffing profile for 2023 and placing teachers in year levels. At the same time, we are working on creating balanced class groups. Each student is nominating five friends that they would be happy to be in a class with in 2023. Please note that we only guarantee each child one friend from their list.

If you feel that there are students that your child would be better separated from next year, please drop me an email or notify the office as soon as possible. Examples of this may include siblings who are close in age or twins, children that you know your child does not work well with, or children that your child has been with for a couple of years in a row and you feel a change is in order.

If your children are leaving the school at the end of this year, please let the office know as soon as possible.

Uniform

Even though we are nearing the end of the school year it is important that our students continue to wear school uniform. Many of our senior students are not complying and that sets the wrong example for our junior students.

Please remember also that long hair should be tied back, and long nails and makeup are not part of the school uniform.

If anyone is cleaning out children’s outgrown uniforms, we would love donations of clean second-hand uniform at the office. We are especially in need of sizes 4 to 6 and 14 plus.

TheirCare dates

TheirCare will be closed Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd December. It will reopen for the holiday program on January 9th. Bookings are essential.

School crossing and traffic zones

A reminder this week to all school families of the importance of maintaining the 40 KMPH speed around the school area. A parent spoke to me this week about the cars speeding along Morton Crescent Bundoora. This is a 40 km zone where some of our children live and play and speeding in this area, and all others around our school zone, puts our students and families at risk.

We have noticed at times children and families crossing Bendoran Crescent in the middle of the ‘kiss and go’ zone, where there is no crossing. Please observe the ‘No Parking’ sign on the opposite side to the school. We ask all parents and students to model using the crossing to encourage students to be safe.

We have the following parking signs in our area. To avoid a fine please make yourself aware of the signs and the rules that apply to each of them.

Kiss and Go

If there is a Kiss and Go sign you may park for 2 minutes and must stay in your car. These are not Bundoora Primary School rules. These are official Victorian road rules and mandated by the local council.

No Parking

If there is a No Parking sign, you can stop for 2 minutes in that area if:

  • You are picking up or dropping off passengers for goods,
  • You always stay within three metres of the stopped vehicle

(Rule number 168 of the Victorian Road Safety Rules)

No Stopping

Rule 169 of the Victorian Road Safety Road Rules states that No Stopping and No Standing signs prohibit any stopping in these areas for any reason whatsoever, including dropping off and picking up passengers.

Thought for the week

Push yourself to be the best you can be because no one is going to do it for you.

Fun Fact: 31 days until Christmas.

Have a great weekend. May we all get to enjoy some sunshine to brighten our spirits.

Sherrin Strathairn

Principal.
