ASHLEY LUCEY-JANNERT, A SINGING & DANCING SENSATION!

Year 9 RIA Dance Specialism student Ashley Lucey-Jannert is kicking goals in the entertainment industry and in demand to showcase her talents. A dancer, singer and entertainer at only 15, Ashley has a long list of accomplishments already under her belt, she has won many dance and vocal competitions over the last 8 years and has appeared in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular for the past 6 years. She has recently been cast as a principal vocalist and principal dancer for the VSSS 2019.

Ashley has been involved in television commercials, voice-overs, short film and has performed at various community events such as Casey Kids Carnival, Relay For Life, La Faya Festival and other cultural festivals throughout Melbourne. She has been a finalist for Casey’s Got Talent & Star Search For A Cause, raising awareness for various charities.

“I am really grateful to have been given the opportunity to do something I love every day. Performing is my absolute passion and the only thing I can imagine myself doing in the future. My favourite place to be is in the studio, rehearsing and working hard to become better at what I do to ensure I can have a successful career when I graduate. The exhilaration I feel when I’m onstage makes all of the blood, sweat and tears worth it! In 5 years, I see myself performing on cruise ships or broadway, travelling the world doing what I love before settling down and working in LA. I believe schools like Rowville Secondary College are fantastic as they provide excellent tuition and opportunities for students wishing to get a career out of their individual specialties,” said Ashley.

“We are all so thankful that we considered RIA for her high school years. Ashley has been able to further her educational and performing arts tuition at the level that we were all hoping for,” said Ashley’s Parents – Julia & Chris. They added, “RIA has also assisted Ashley in recognising that she doesn’t need to focus on only one interest/skill/passion. Although being a dance specialism student, her love of singing has developed to the point that she would like to start busking and she has recently performed as a featured vocalist at the Holland Festival in Berwick. We cannot be more proud of her academic, performance and community achievements over the past 2 years, and have the RIA staff, VSSS mentors and her dance school to thank for this.”

On Tuesday 7th May our college community all gathered at the Knox Athletics Track to take part in our annual Whole School Athletics Day.

Rowville Secondary College students across all four programs and both campuses came together to compete and cheer their houses on; Mabo, Aston, Walton and Stynes.

“The community spirit of the carnival was infectious. It was absolutely amazing to see all the students embrace Athletics Day, have fun and enthusiastically support their house,” said Assistant Principal, Ms. Robyn Geake.

STUDENT REPORT – ONE

By Izzy D’Orazio, Year 11.

Athletics Day was alight with excitement, beaming faces and chatter everywhere you looked. The competitive events on the day were High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Triple Jump, various short and long distance running events and Relays plus the 1500m Walk.

Top highlights included a stand-out High Jump result from Tyler Gray, a year 12 General Excellence student equalling the record of 1.75m. He met this record on his first attempt with no warm up as a large crowd of supporters stood by cheering him on.

Face painting was an incredibly busy stall with a constant stream of students lined up to have their face painted by one of our Art Specialism students. The costume contest was also an extremely popular event with year 12’s dressed as Disney princesses, superheroes, fairies and more. The overall winner of the contest was the Pac-Man group with Pac-Man wearing a large cardboard cutout and four other Pac-Mans wearing coloured fabric to represent each house colour. Vector came second and the Mad Hatter as third. The contest was judged by the Rowville Police, who were present at the request of our House Captains to form a relationship with the students of our school. The students’ choice ‘best costume’ was the infamous Britney Spears!

All the points from each event were added up and the day ended with an exhilarating trophy presentation. The spectator stands were filled with loud cheers as ‘Mabo’ was announced the champion house with 1,213 points. Aston was filled with excitement as they came second with 1,130 points. Followed by Stynes house coming in third with 1,027 point and Walton house last with 800 points. All houses should be proud of their achievements and success on the day.

STUDENT REPORT – TWO

By Laura Salter, Year 10.

Walking up into the stadium on Athletics day was a mass of colour; there were year 12 students running around in their amazing costumes; the Mad Hatter dashing passed, Aquaman holding his trident high, and all the Disney princesses walking elegantly through the crowd. There were patches of green, blue, red and yellow filling the stands, some wearing tutus, others with ribbons in their hair. Gradually the crowds calmed down and events started getting announced.

From that point on the day was pretty relaxed, my friends and I walked around from event to event, finding spots to sit and cheer on fellow classmates.

Overall, the day was very much focused on house spirit and coming together as a school to have a much deserved break from sitting behind desks.

STUDENT REPORT – THREE

By Merryn Olman, Year 12.

Walking into the stadium on House Athletics Day was like walking into an arena teeming with life and filled with bright colours. Everyone was supporting their houses including the year 12’s who were making their way through the crowds in their captivating costumes. The house spirit flooded the stadium when kids started participating and cheering on their peers in all the events.

There were kids joining in with the small activities such as the three legged race, the egg and spoon race and tunnel ball. For the people who did not feel like participating in these activities there was face painting, a photo booth and some fantastic live music.

The athletics carnival was for everyone even Aquaman, the Mad Hatter, all the Disney princesses, the Despicable Me characters, dinosaurs and Pac man who arrived to create an amazing atmosphere that we will never forget.

YEAR 8 NETBALLERS UNDEFEATED

Last Thursday, the 16th May our Year 8 RSA Netballers competed in the Knox Secondary Netball Intermediate Girls Division Competition. We played against the West Campus as well as Wantirna and went through to the final undefeated. The girls played a great game and finished the day as undefeated winners which means they proceed through to the next round. It was a great team effort by all.

YEAR 7'S HELP MAKE DESICISIONS ON KNOX WATER SYSTEMS

On Friday the 17th of May, our year 7 class went to KIOSC to help make decisions on Knox water systems. We went around to 4 different activities, each contributing to the final decisions.

Our first activity was based on economics, in this rotation we discussed how we can be water efficient. The second activity we participated in was environmental, here we went for a walk and looked at how fast water can go through different types of surfaces. Thirdly, we went and learnt about the cultural area of water, and we chose how much of each types of plants were the best mix for Knox. In the very last activity social was our main focus. We made a decision on what water tank is best for the environment.

In the end we all had an awesome time and we thank Mr. Gerges for supervising us on the day and making the experience even better!

MSA IMMERSION DAY #2

On Tuesday 7th May, we held our second MSA Immersion day for 2019. Over 25 local primary school children visited us to experience a day in the life of our Maths & Science Academy. Experiments, classroom activities and presentations by our Director of MSA, Mr. Tallarida & Head of MSA, Ms. Clare Strain. A great and insightful day for all who attended! BUSINESS BREAKFAST WITH NATHAN BUCKLEY

Recently I attended the Rotary Club of Rowville-Lysterfield's Charity Business Breakfast with four of our students, in conjunction with our ‘Interact’ relationship at Rowville Secondary College. It was a Q & A with Collingwood Head Coach Nathan Buckley. After an interview, 5 questions were allowed from the audience, and I was therefore lucky enough to be chosen to ask the following:

“What qualities / personal attributes do you look for in the people you surround yourself with, both in personal and professional capacities?”

Nathan answered: “Integrity - honesty and hardworking, Passion - challenging oneself to do their best no matter what the task and Open Mindedness - the ability to be empathetic to others' situations and beliefs.” Overall a great message for our students and college community, and closely aligned with our core values.

GO TAMSIN!!

Ms. Tamsin Nelson, one of our Learning Mentors and PE, Health & VCAL Teacher recently played for the Australian Over 40 Hockey Team at the Trans Tasman Tournament on the Gold Coast. This is a biannual tournament and there were 14 age groups represented from 35+ to 65+ in both men and women.

“In the 40+ team we won 2 games and lost 1 meaning we were the winners of our age group. Overall Australia won 13 of the 14 age groups giving us the title of Trans Tasman Champions.” said Ms. Nelson.

Well done Tamsin, this is an amazing achievement!

TEISHA SHADWELL PLAYS FOR TIGERS WHEELCHAIR FOOTY TEAM

YEAR 7 & 8 COLLABORATE FOR FILM FESTIVAL

The year 7 and 8 Media and Drama Specialism students have been collaborating on a film project to enter into the International Children’s Film Festival and over the last two weeks they have held three shoot days. Students worked in a professional and focused manner throughout, supporting each other and giving and receiving creative direction. "It was fabulous to see how these young creatives came together with such positivity, persistence and vision!" Said Ms Johnson, Teacher.

JUNIOR BAND PRACTICE

Junior Band has started their weekly rehearsals. "Students are already playing pieces while learning how to play in a band , listening to each other and following the conductor," said Viv McPherson, Instrumental Music Coordinator.

STAFF PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL FIRST AID COURSE

A large number of our staff attended a First Aid course at the Eastern campus last Wednesday where they received professional training over a broad range of topics including CPR, procedures for asthma, anaphylaxis and even venomous snake bites. For all those who attended, the practical requirements of resuscitating dummies, applying bandages and slings and administering epipens were a valuable way to reinforce theoretical knowledge. The stories shared were funny, informative and will help staff remember key information.

“As a first time attendee - I was amazed at the amount of information that was delivered and really enjoyed the practical requirements to consolidate that knowledge.” Samantha P.

We have started Knitting club at the East library every Wednesday and "it was a joy", said Library Assistant Ms. Thuy Tran.

RIA USA STUDY TOUR

A-LEAGUE MELBOURNE CITY STRIKER JAMIE MACLAREN VISITS RSA

The RSA Football program recently had a very special visitor in A-League Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren. Jamie chatted to both the junior and intermediate year groups about his career and offered them some advice, based on his personal experiences in junior and youth football, including his time at the Victorian Institute of Sport under the guidance then of RSA coach Ian Greener.

Jamie thrilled the students with his stories and experiences and answered numerous questions when the RSA students were invited to question him on all aspects of his career from junior football through to his Socceroo involvement, including the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Our special relationship as one of Melbourne City Colleges of Football offers the school these special opportunities for the RSA students to gain a further insight into the world of professional football.

INDIGENOUS FLAVOURINGS ARE A HIT

Over the last 5 weeks, year 11 Food Studies students have been investigating indigenous flavourings and how Australia's current cuisine has come about. This week as part of their formal assessment they have created Calzones and incorporated a number of indigenous flavourings into the dish. They chose to serve this with some commercially prepared sauces and chutney that also included flavourings indigenous to Australia.

Our student leaders took part in the ANZAC Day Service at Waterford Valley accompanied by Teacher, Mr Wayne Judge.

MITCH PERRY - CRICKET CHAMP

Former RSA Cricket graduate (from last year) Mitch Perry maintained a Victorian Cricket rookie contract for the upcoming summer. Mitch is a fast bowler with the Monash Tigers Cricket Club.
