Science Week

At-Home Experiment Competition

Experiments were prepared by the STEAM student leaders Navneet and Rhini, with some assistance from our lab technician Suzanne Thornley, and completed by students at home.

Congratulations to the Science Week At-home Experiment Competition winner Matilda Waugh (7A), who with help from her Dad not only videoed herself undertaking the experiment but also produced a conclusion video to explain how cabbage is an indicator of pH (acidity) of different substances. Well done Matilda.

Education Perfect Science Competition

Congratulations to all those that competed. MGSC came 3rd in the state out of 288 schools and 40th globally out of 1,874. Thank you to Mrs Louise Reiniets for facilitating this competition.

A special congratulations to the following students who won awards and especially to Raf Sampani who nearly single-handedly won her class a pizza lunch. A prize will be awarded to the top three place-getters. Here are the medal winners.

Year 7 class prize for undertaking activities

All Year 7 classes embraced Science Week and contributed by undertaking experiments, researching scientific information, making a poster about the future of our oceans or competing in the Ed Perfect Science Competition. Well done to all especially in this remote environment. The winner of the class prize is 7B for the large number of experiments that they were able to undertake with special mention to 7D for the variety of tasks they completed. Well done and the class prize will be awarded next term.

STAR Week

Last week was Science Technician Appreciation & Recognition (STAR) Week.

The Science domain would like to acknowledge the hard work and knowledge our laboratory technician, Suzanne Thornley, brings to our team. Among a myriad of tasks she advises and prepares all the material for our experiments when we are at school and has prepared videos for Year 12 SACs and the Year 7s while we are remote learning. All of MGSC know we are very lucky to have someone so experienced and hard-working at our school as she enhances the learning experiences of all our students. Some words of appreciation from our Year 7s are below:

Thanks Mrs Thornley for the video’s you and your daughter made for us, it was very helpful and interesting 😊

Coco Hasener 7H

Thank you for the videos you make for us during remote learning and getting the equipment ready for us when we do science experiments!
