School Council meeting 25th November 2019

The School Council met on Monday 25th November to discuss the activities for the remainder of Term 4, 2019 and how best to prepare for 2020 – the beginning of a new decade for MPWPS!

We started out the evening with a de-brief of the Japan Study Tour, led by Diana Vivian. There was so many positive outcomes for the children who attended this life changing trip. Generally, the chance to experience a different culture, practice their Japanese and see the many historical sites of this amazing country. Of particular note was the visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, the homestay and of course Disneyland Tokyo! We finished up discussing ways in which the tour can be even better when it is next run in 2021. Thanks Diana, Cindy, Kerri and all the incredible parent helpers who attended this trip. Your contribution was instrumental in creating lifelong memories for our children.

We then had the Principal’s report where Kerri advised of the new teachers coming to the school (Dessa Walsh and Tim Cannan) and the promotion of Kim Simmons to the position of Learning Specialist Literacy and Jessica Greenbaum to the position of Numeracy. We are all pleased to see a blend of new faces and stability in critical learning areas. We then focused on the creative side of the school activities. The MVIMP Combined Concert was a great night with MPWPS excelling at both the on stage performance and the quota of winning raffle tickets. The Art Show was also a success, showcasing the children’s artistic work in a creative and beautiful display.

The Sub-Committee reports were tabled and discussed. Junior School Council were pleased to report the success of Bandana day – with all bandanas sold – and great interest in the work going on in Jack’s paddock. Thanks to all the parents that participated in the recent survey on Coles/Woolworths school sponsorship. We are collating the results and discussing these with the Junior School Council and the Green Team. The Education Committee had a particularly productive meeting with discussions around the curriculum, better resources for the library, grade 6 graduation and the Program Plan and Budget prepared by the teachers for 2020. A significant amount of planning has occurred already, and it will ensure a great start to the new year. Great news for the Environment Committee who were successful in their application for the MVCC Edible and Interactive Garden Grant – $3,100! A working bee is likely to occur early in the new year, so watch this space.

Personally, the opportunity to be on School Council has been very rewarding. The collegiate way in which the parents, teachers and staff work together is fantastic; all to benefit the students at this great school. If you want to be part of this and really make a difference, please put your hand up next year when roles on the School Council become available.

Community Engagement Sub Committee Report

Our newly formed Community Engagement Sub-Committee of School Council meets monthly in the weeks before School Council.  The purpose is to deal with all things Community; discussing aspects of involvement, parent, community participation across the school, and linking Parent Reps to the School Council.  At our last meeting we looked at the Volunteers Policy providing information to update within the cycle.

The Sub-Committee is also wanting to develop a Parent Skills and Volunteers register as  many schools have such a register.  The purpose would be to access the skills and support of the community. Please consider  adding your name and skills to the register.

If you are wanting to be part of the Community Engagement Sub-Committee we meet on a Monday after school (4pm) in Kerri’s Office.  All interested welcome to attend.

Kerri

At present Convenor and Minute-taker.
