Women in STEM and Construction Excursion

On Wednesday February 1st, Year 11 and 12 students interested in learning about women in trades were invited to attend the Hume Women in STEM and Construction Careers and Jobs Expo. This expo was a must for female and non-binary jobseekers who want to work in construction, engineering, and manufacturing. The students had access to free careers counsellors, mini tool workshops, mentoring programs, and an opportunity to hear from real tradeswomen.

The students were able to speak with multiple employers from across the state who are determined to raise the 2% rate of women employed in trades in Victoria to at least 40% within the next year. Panel speakers from She Force, AMWU Victoria and Otis Elevator Company detailed the number of supports available for women in the trades industry now compared to 30 years ago.  A career for women in trades has proven to support a young woman to become financially independent, HECS-debt-free and further longevity of employment.

Students were able to meet and greet with potential employers and recruiters from Qantas, Winslow, Otis Elevator Company and Nestle. They also had access to one-on-one career coaching, resume development workshops and interactive trade taster stalls during which they learnt how to use basic hand tools.

The purpose of this expo was for students to explore their pathways and develop career action plans. These students, as well as all Craigieburn Secondary students, will have the opportunity to discuss these pathways with their teachers and education support staff and be able to realign their study goals.

Thank you to the students involved who were active and positive participants throughout the day.  CSC staff look forward to hosting more experience days like this.
