Diocesan Swimming Carnival Roundup

Well, what a great day and no I am not talking about the weather! When I first arrived to set up our team base for the day, I encountered my first problem, where in the pouring rain a number of teachers/spectators including myself were not allowed to enter through the main entrance. After entering through the indoor pool area, I was able to set up our school shade structure on the finish line and then began the process of waiting for the rain to stop. Which to no avail!

All of our team members arrived and began their preparations. Some warmed up in the pool, while others just tried to find a place to stay dry. After all of the difficulties encountered with the starter and the timers have been rectified, we started with Annie swimming in the first race of the day, the Open Girls 100m. Annie finished 14th overall and then all of our team members participated in their 50m Freestyle events. Grace F and Jessica took out the quinella in their heat, while Grace S came 5th in her trial and fifth overall. Both Georgina and Angus came 2nd in their heat, with Addison coming 3rd in her heat of the 11 year Girls 50m. Annie swam in the next heat and again swam well. Lachie placed 4th in his heat and Brydie came 5th in hers. Casey finished off the 50m by coming 2nd in his heat. Georgina then competed in the Junior Girls 50m Backstroke and she was involved in a photo finish, where she came 2nd. Annie and Addison competed against each other in the first heat of the 11yr Girls 50m Backstroke, in which Annie led all of the way in coming first, with Addison not that far behind, placing fourth.

The last race for our team was the Junior Girls Relay, where we were represented by Grace S, Jessica P-K, Grace F and Georgina. It was a battle of David and Goliath as we were definitely the smallest school in this race as the girls were competing against schools from Moree, Walgett, Tamworth, Wee Waa, Narrabri and Gunnedah. With a lot of crowd from our supporters, our team place fourth, in which was a great way to end the day!

Unfortunately, no member of our team swam fast enough to gain selection in the Armidale Diocese squad. But we will be back next year, ready to give our all again!
