What's Happening in Grade One?

What an amazing start to the year! The grade one students have been busy getting into a routine and forming positive friendships within their classroom.

In Year One we are using a range of concrete materials to help us learn about place value up to 100. This week we used unifix blocks and learnt how many tens and ones are in a 2-digit number.  We worked in pairs and small groups and participated in a range of hands on activities to guide our learning.

We are also learning about Data Representation and Interpretation. Students have been taking part in activities where they have collected information in the form of a tally and then represented this information in either column or picture graphs. Our students have also been learning about interpreting the information they can see in graphical displays. So far we have collected and represented data about our favourite colours and ages and we will continue to practice these skills by collecting information about our birthdays, favourite foods and animals.

In English students have been busy learning about narrative writing. We have established what an orientation is and have been including who, what, when and why in our orientation writing.  Students have been exploring a variety of action verbs and describing words. Students can list describing words that relate to texture, number, colour, position, shape, size and doing. They are all doing an amazing job and we can't wait to see how their learning about action verbs and narrative writing evolves over the term.

The year one students are learning to be SAFE online. Technology is all around us and it is a wonderful tool to help us connect and learn. It is so important that we take the time to ensure that we help our students know how to engage online in a safe and responsible way.

Looking forward to a wonderful year ahead
