Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mums, carers and special family members on Sunday.

A big thank you to everyone who sent in a photo or picture to be included in our school video. The videos created has been uploaded to SeeSaw.

The staff at Newlands are setting you a challenge. Can you work out who is in the photos we have uploaded. We will put the answers to who are in the pictures in next weeks newsletter.

Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate Mothers Day during lockdown.

  • Plant a tree together. Do it using any of the leftover seeds from fruits and vegetables you have.
  • Go through old photo albums together.
  • Ask her to pass down a famous family recipe to you.
  • Paint her nails! If you are into it, you both can paint each other’s nails.
  • Bring back the good old handmade greeting card. Mothers are the sentimental nostalgic kind and they would love it if you made a card for them.
  • Make her bed for her and watch her face light up with a smile.
  • Draw together! Remember the arts and crafts projects in which we would certainly fail if it were not for the help of our mothers!
  • Recreate an old photograph that you both love. Make a collage of the two to showcase how much your family has grown!
  • Watch your mother’s favourite movie with her, and make her some movie time snacks if you are up to it.
  • Karaoke! Sing a song together on any of the apps that support karaoke singing like Smule. Choose her favourite song and sing it with her.
  • Share school life experiences with each other. Try to find similarities and differences among yours and her school life.
  • Surprise her with her favourite meal!  If you are a first time cook, go for something easier, like her favourite dessert or favourite snack.
  • Give your mother a complete day off from all the housework. Reassign all chores your mother does by taking on a little extra and let her have a day to herself to relax.
  • Play a board game together! Or even cards!
  • Choose a Youtube workout and complete it together.  A workout together would be fun and productive.

Mother’s Day can be very tough on a lot of people for a variety of reasons - be it their relationship with their own mothers, or their roles as mothers themselves.

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate our first human connection, the sacred bond between mother and child. We’ll see ads and social media posts everywhere this weekend. Some friends will share old photos of their mums, while others will write tributes to their mothers.

But what if none of these pictures and posts look anything like you or your life?

The vast majority of us don’t look anything like the images we see. Our lives are much more complicated, especially during this time of lockdown. This will be my second mother's day without my mother and I know that will make the day a difficult one in some ways.

Please reach out for support if you need it.
