10-12 Campus News

David Hall, Head of the 10-12 Campus

Bob Marley: ‘You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.’

There is strength and then there is resilience.  As we settle into our 6th lockdown here in Victoria, resilience is a muscle that will be well exercised as we move toward the end of yet another interrupted year.

Most of it has been said before, 'we are proud of our community', 'we are lucky to have teachers that care so much for their students and students that respect and believe in their school' and none of that has changed, but the renewed sense of grit that has been shown through this, perhaps more challenging, lockdown is unto and of itself, nothing short of remarkable.

The school awaits word on the details behind the Consideration of Educational Disadvantage (CED) process that will help aid our students moving forward and you can be sure that we will act on this as soon as those details come to hand.  It would be hard to believe that many could have escaped an educational disadvantage as we move past our 200th day of lockdown in the past 18 months.

Please know that your teachers are all doing their very best in trying conditions.  No matter how well we pivot to Online Continuous Learning (OCL) - and we do it better than most - the teaching and learning journey is a difficult one.  We are grateful for your understanding and patience in these trying times.

Welcome Zoe Yang

I would like to welcome Ms Zoe Yang to the senior school staff.  Zoe is an Alumni of Sandringham College and is an exceptional employ for the Mathematics department.  Zoe taught her first solo class (ever) online last week.  It is a sign of her resilience and resourcefulness that she arrived, armed with an iPad and a mac pro ready to take on the challenge.  I remember my first class 33 years ago - Zoe did a good sight better than I managed and she did so online.  Welcome back, Zoe!

Alum Online

With homework club out of action for the foreseeable future, we would like to trial an online version of the club.

Recent alumni have been employed to help students better access their homework and their study by providing another perspective and a further voice to the academic problems that can confront, confound, confuse and discombobulate even the most academic among us.

As we all hope to study smarter, sometimes a 10 minute chat can save hours of work.

Homework club has always been popular at Sandy College and now we are bringing it to TEAMS as Alum Online.

When:  Alum Online runs on a Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5pm.

The Tutors:  Students have various expertise to offer across the curriculum but can also be useful when talking about study habits and exam techniques.

Sign up:  You simply sign up to the Alum Online team and, send a chat (to your chosen alumni) to determine a time to catch up.  Catch ups are set at 20 minutes per student but may extend if time allows.  The team link will be regularly posted on Compass so keep an eye out for it.
