Library

"If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book."  J.K Rowling

"An effective school library enhances student learning outcomes by providing a range of programs, services and resources which support teaching and learning.  It also supports and encourages student reading experiences." Effective school libraries. (2021).

At Sandringham College, not only do we have an amazing up to date physical YA fiction collection, a curriculum based non-fiction collection and a multitude of audiobooks and eBooks through our online platform.

We also provide to staff and students:

  • Digital copying of portions of textbooks and novels.
  • Newspaper articles, databases and journals
  • Research assistance
  • Topic guides and teaching resources (Topic guides assist students with their assessments, they are regularly updated.  Topic guides are a great starting point for ALTs)
  • Encyclopedia Britannica

All of the above can be accessed via the Library website

Book Week

Unfortunately, book week will once again fall during lockdown.  But it is not going to be put on hold.  The theme for 2021 is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. There will be a number of activities happening at Sandringham College to celebrate reading, books and stories...

This year:

  • I have asked staff to tell me their favourite book as a student (primary or secondary) with a five word descriptor about why it is their favourite book. Students will then be asked to guess who liked which book.
  • A writing competition.
  • We will have a Bookmark Design Competition and the winning three designs will be professionally made into book marks for 2022. Download the Bookmark Design Competition flyer below for more information.

Details of the above activities will be available via compass and the library website.

The Children's Book of the Year will be awarded on Friday 20 August to mark the beginning of Book Week. Click the button below to view this year's shortlist.

Note: All shortlisted titles of the older reader and younger reader titles are now available in the library!

Time magazine released The top 100 YA books of all time.  A bit American centric, so a few Aussie YA's could be swapped in. How many have you read?  What would you add and take out?

Books offer a healing retreat for youngsters caught up in a Pandemic

'The Conversation' recently published an article on how books are a healing retreat for young readers.  It's sadly all too relevant for us at the moment, so I thought I'd share it with you.  Reading doesn't have to mean a chapter book, it can be a non-fiction book, a magazine of interest, a short story, a graphic novel, manga or a comic.
