News from the Library at ECP/Novinky z knihovny ECP

It’s been another busy term in the library with lots of fun events happening in the library - it’s been really exciting to find out that some of our students have either been selected as finalists or have won different awards that we have been promoting in the library!  Read on to find out more!

Iris Book Award/Ocenění Iris Book Award

A wonderful team of 13 students met in the library during the afternoon of 23 May to compete against six other international schools in the Iris Award Middle School Book Bowl. Each student read as many of the 15 shortlisted books as possible in order to compete.  It was great fun and we were delighted to come 4th as the competition was very tough! Once both the Middle School and High School Book Bowls were complete, students from 17 different international schools voted to choose their favourite book in each category. The winners were as follows:

A really exciting read about a group of friends returning from a summer camping trip by plane.  It soon becomes clear that the plane has been hijacked but they have no idea why or where they are going!  They soon realise that deciding who to trust will become a matter of life or death! (Accelerated Reader® Level: 5.2 / 6.0 pts)

High School/Vítěz pro vyšší ročníkyThe Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab

This wonderful fantasy follows Addie who foolishly makes a pact with the devil in a moment of desperation: she will live forever, but will be forgotten by everyone she meets…  The story follows her across centuries and continents as she tries to find love and meaning. As one reviewer said, it's ironic that it’s such an unforgettable book!

All the books shorted-listed for the Iris Book Award are available from the library and you can read more about the Iris Award here including the books that are shortlisted for next year’s award when we are hoping that teachers and parents will join us in reading and voting on the High School books! More news about that next time!

The ECP Literary Journal/Literární žurnál ECP

Students looking at their work in the ECP Literary Journal
Students looking at their work in the ECP Literary Journal

During the Literary Festival in October, many students wrote poems, flash fiction and short stories. All of these were collected together for publication in our 2022 Literary Journal, along with artwork created for the Cultural Olympiad and other creative writing submitted for inclusion during the year.  It’s always so exciting to see the students’ reactions when the journal arrives from the publisher and they can look through to find their own work in print!  You can see all their wonderful work here.

Během říjnového Literárního festivalu mnoho studentů psalo básně, flash fikci a povídky.

Vždy je krásné vidět reakce studentů, když časopis dorazí z tiskárny a oni si ho mohou prohlédnout, aby našli své vlastní tištěné práce! Všechny

jejich úžasná díly můžete nalézt zde.

New Books/Nové knihy

As always we have lots of new books that have arrived in the library in the last couple of weeks, but here are just a selected few that I’d like to recommend…

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, this book is an action-packed adventure, an epic love story, a marvellously conceived and executed page-turner!  Several students have said that this is their favourite book ever! (Accelerated Reader® Level: 4.7 / 14.0 pts)

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

This graphic novel has to be the most talked about books this year!  Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more...?  Read the start of this great series and you’ll definitely want to read the rest! (Accelerated Reader® Level: 2.5 / 1.0 pt)

Přečtěte si začátek této skvělé série a určitě si budete chtít přečíst zbytek! (Úroveň v Accelerated Readeru®: 2,5 / 1,0 bod)

Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town by Bonnie Sue Hitchcock

This book was recommended by Marko Ivanovič in Year 1 because he enjoyed it so much! It’s been short-listed for lots of awards and tells the story of a group of teenagers who live in small towns, separated by distance, but whose stories are woven together in the most unexpected of ways. Everyone who has read it, loved it! (Accelerated Reader® Level: 5.9 / 8.0 pts)

I’ve been reflecting on my reading this year and trying to decide which were my favourite books. I don’t think I can decide upon any one, but those that have stayed with me and have continued to make me think are:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Zoli by Colum McCann, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak.

Have a great summer, enjoy doing lots of reading and if you need any encouragement to get started on a novel, then listen to this podcast by Dr Michael Mosely where he explains that losing yourself in a novel for a short time each day can boost your brainpower, improve social bonds and, surprisingly, help you live longer!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins

A little while back I read a book called The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and to say I really enjoyed it wouldn't even cover it! Never during my time reading this book, did I think, “Well, it's become a bit boring now, I don't even know if I wanna keep reading it anymore.”  I personally love a book, where I can just get lost. For me, reading is an escape from the busy and stressful life that balancing school work and social life is. So when I find a book that can keep me reading on forever, I am very grateful for the break from reality. This book follows an actress, Evelyn Hugo, and her scandalous stories about her and her husbands. One quote that I especially loved was, when asked if it bothered her that she was always mentioned with her seven husbands rather than just as Evelyn Hugo. She said,  “No… because they are just husbands. I am Evelyn Hugo.” I definitely recommend this book. I bought it for myself because of a recommendation from one of my friends. When I went into the ECP library and asked if we had it, Ms. Selbie asked if I liked it and when I answered yes, she said she would order it for the library. So now there is the option of borrowing the book in the school library. It’s worth reading as it is level 6.8 and has 25 points!

As someone long involved in the murky world of rock’n’ roll I am always interested in the autobiographies of musicians, especially those from the early period of the music’s history. Chuck Berry has long been a fascinating figure to me. His memoirs paint an incredible picture of the struggles he went through, while also telling a cautionary tale about the temptations of fame and the dangers of being too intelligent. Jerry Lee Lewis, His own story allows the ‘killer;’ to try and explain some of the more questionable behaviour of his life, but, of course, he never explains - he just is. As a bona fide force of nature, you’d be as well trying to explain away a hurricane.

Finally Little Richard - The Quasar of Rock by Charles White shows how the eponymous hero was way ahead of his time in the fields of sex, drugs and, indeed, rock’n’roll. As he says, “Man, I was driving a pink Cadillac before that sucker Prince was even born.” If you have an interest in the history of 20th century music, the social development of the last century, and how there’s nothing new in show business, these three books are essential reading.

Marco McKee, English Teacher

Konečně Little Richard - The Quasar of Rock od Charlese Whitea ukazuje, jak stejnojmenný hrdina výrazně předběhl svou dobu v oblasti sexu, drog a vlastně i rock’n’rollu.
