Berlin trip/Výlet do Berlína

After a two-year delay due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, we finally made it to Berlin. Accompanied by four staff members (Mssrs Pugh, Bleaks and Foster, and Mrs Smith) the 36-strong group of Year 3 and 4 students of German headed off on the morning of 23rd May for a week-long exploration of the cultural, historical and contemporary highlights of the German capital. Despite being out of practice for such a long residential trip, it has to be said that our students were excellent ambassadors not just of ECP, but also of the Czech Republic. ‘It was a pleasure to travel with them,’ said Mr Pugh, relieved once back in Prague that the trip had passed off without incident.

Below you will find an account of the trip from the perspective of our students, composed by Lucie Vašicová:

Finally, after many delays, our German Berlin trip departed between the days of the 23rd of May and the 28th. We took the train from Hlavní Nádraží to the Berlin Bahnhof. On the day we arrived we had a 15-minute walk from the station to our Hotel. Even on that brief walk we noticed many famous sites such as the Bundestag and got to know the city.  

I would say there were two sides to the trip: The history of Germany and contemporary culture. 

Every day saw us involved in at least two organised activities, all led by friendly tour guides who explained the location, meaning and history of where we were in a very straightforward way. 

Some of the highlights were:

• The DDR Museum - an interactive experience and a fascinating way to learn about East German life. We were divided into small groups and completed a “scavenger hunt” in the museum. A lot of similarities to life in a Czech panelák were spotted!

• The Street Art Tour started at the Alexanderplatz and took us all over the cultural part of Berlin and the Kreuzberg district, where we learned about different graffiti styles and artists and were able to check out many interesting designs all around us. 
• The tour concluded with The Graffiti Workshop. It took place near the Jamaican club YAAM and was graffiti up close and personal. We were let loose with spray paints and allowed to let our imaginations run wild. With the help of a friendly artist-instructor, we managed to create four intriguing graffiti designs. 

• Olympiastadion - our first impression here was actually about the history of the stadium, built by the Nazis for the 1936 Olympic Games, rather than any Olympian feats. After a brief insight into the history, we were able to walk around the whole stadium, sit in the VIP member seats, and look around the Jesse Owens lounge, changing rooms, conference rooms and even indoor track. 

• On the last day, we finished off the trip with a private Bundestag tour, exploring the parliament, conference rooms, library and the viewing galleries at the top. 

There were many other historical monuments we encountered, such as parts of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, the Holocaust Memorial to name but a few.

At lunch and dinner time, we were granted a perfect amount of free time. In this time we could explore the city more, visit local shops, restaurants and businesses. We could also just sit in a park and take in the German culture around us. 

Overall, my fellow classmates and I were very pleased with the trip and were grateful for the opportunity, especially as the other foreign trips were cancelled. Danke schön, Herr Pugh und die anderen Lehrer! Many of us would have gladly stayed on an extra week. We would definitely recommend this trip to other students if they are given the opportunity. Just be prepared to walk endlessly around the city and speak some German.

Po dvouletém zpoždění kvůli omezením způsobeným pandemií jsme se konečně dostali do Berlína. V doprovodu čtyř učitelů (pana Pugh, Bleakse, Fostera a paní Smith) se 36členná skupina studentů německého jazyka ve 3. a 4. ročníku vydala 23. května ráno na týdenní průzkum kulturních, historických a současných památek v německé metropoli. Navzdory tomu, že naši studenti vyšli s ohledem na delší výlety kvůli pandemii ze cviku, je třeba říci, že naši studenti byli vynikajícími ambasadory nejen ECP, ale i České republiky. „Bylo mi potěšením s nimi cestovat,“ řekl pan Pugh, kterému se po návratu do Prahy ulevilo, že cesta proběhla bez incidentů.

Níže naleznete popis výletu z pohledu studentů, který připravila Lucie Vašicová:

Po několika odkladech se náš výlet do Berlína konečně uskutečnil, v termínu od 23. do 28. května. Jeli jsme vlakem z Hlavního nádraží na Berlin Bahnhof. V den, kdy jsme dorazili, jsme se po 15ti minutách chůze dostali z nádraží do našeho hotelu. Už na této krátké procházce jsme viděli mnoho slavných míst jako je Bundestag a poznali město.

Cesta se zaměřila na dvě oblasti: dějiny Německa a současnou kulturu.

Každý den jsme byli zapojeni do nejméně dvou organizovaných aktivit, jež byly vedeny přátelskými průvodci, kteří nám velmi jasně vysvětlili umístění, význam a historii konkrétních míst, kde jsme se nacházeli.

Mezi ty nejlepší patřily:

• Muzeum NDR – interaktivní zážitek a fascinující způsob, jak se dozvědět o životě ve východním Německu. Byli jsme rozděleni do malých skupinek a absolvovali jsme tam „hledání pokladu“. Spatřili jsme mnoho podobností se životem v českém paneláku!
• Street Art Tour začala na náměstí Alexanderplatz a zavedla nás kolem kulturní části Berlína a čtvrti Kreuzberg, kde jsme se dozvěděli o různých stylech graffiti a umělcích a mohli si prohlédnout mnoho zajímavých návrhů, které byly všude kolem nás.
• Prohlídka byla zakončena graffiti workshopem, který se odehrál poblíž jamajského klubu YAAM a velmi nám graffiti přiblížil. Dostali jsme prostor experimentovat s barvami ve spreji a nechali jsme popustit uzdu fantazii. S pomocí přátelského umělce-instruktora se nám podařilo vytvořit čtyři zajímavé graffiti návrhy.

• Olympijský stadion - Nejprve jsme se věnovali historii stadionu, postaveného nacisty pro olympijské hry v roce 1936, spíše než olympijským výkonům. Po krátkém nahlédnutí do historie jsme si mohli projít celý stadion, posadit se do míst VIP členů a porozhlédnout se po salonku Jesse Owense, po šatnách, konferenčních místnostech a dokonce i vnitřní dráze.

• Poslední den jsme výlet zakončili soukromou prohlídkou Bundestagu, včetně prohlídky parlamentu, konferenčních místností, knihovny a vyhlídkových galerií v nejvyšší části.

Narazili jsme i na mnoho dalších historických památek, jako například části Berlínské zdi, Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, památník holocaustu|.

V čase oběda a večeře jsme měli dostatečné množství volného času, během něhož jsme mohli více prozkoumat město, navštívit místní obchody a restaurace. Mohli jsme také jen tak sedět v parku a vnímat německou kulturu kolem nás.

Celkově jsme byli se spolužáky s výletem velmi spokojeni a byli jsme za tuto příležitost vděční, zvláště když ostatní zahraniční výlety musely být zrušeny. Danke schön, Herr Pugh and die anderen Lehrer! Mnozí z nás by rádi zůstali o týden déle. Určitě bychom tento výlet doporučili dalším studentům, pokud budou mít příležitost jet. Jen se připravte na nekonečné procházky po městě a využití vaší němčiny.

Year 5 Dutch trip/Výlet 5. ročníku do Holandska

On the first day of the Dutch trip focused on universities, Year 5 students visited Leiden. Later they also saw Erasmus University College in Rotterdam, Utrecht University and LUC in the Hague. They also managed to spend some time at the beach in Den Haag.

Během prvního dne výletu do Holandska se zaměřením na návštěvy univerzit studenti 5. ročníku objevili město Leiden. Později také prozkoumali Erasmus University College v Rotterdamu či Utrecht University a LUC v Haagu. K tomu se jim podařilo také strávit  v Haagu nějaký čas na pláži.

End-of-year trips/Výlety na konci školního roku

YEAR 1/1. ROČNÍK

Year 1 students had an opportunity to learn about the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE) programme and taste some of the activities during the Y1 Adventure Trip.

The Adventure part of the trip consisted of two days of activities related to the DofE programme. The training day on Monday included important First Aid training, basic map reading and compass work. All of these are very important for the actual DofE expeditions.

In the afternoon, they travelled by train to Srbsko and then walked to the campsite where they spent the night in tests, learned how to use a gas cooker safely and practised map reading skills. The next day they completed a 15 km walk carrying all their gear.

Wednesday, the final day, was marked by a treasure hunt back in Prague. The students spent a day exploring the Old Town through its towers and learned a lot about Medieval Culture which is an important part of the Czech and History curriculum in Year 2. At the St. Agnes Monastery the students had an opportunity to explore both the interior and also the exterior of the Convent, which has recently been completely reconstructed and is a valuable example of Early Gothic architecture. A short boat trip during which students enjoyed the beautiful views of Prague with their friends was a part of the day too.

Studenti 1. ročníku měli příležitost dozvědět se o programu Mezinárodní ceny vévody z Edinburghu (DofE) a vyzkoušet si některé z aktivit během dobrodružné části výletu. Tato část se skládala ze dvou dnů aktivit spojených s programem DofE. Školící den v pondělí zahrnoval důležité školení První pomoci, základy čtení z mapy a práci s buzolou. To vše je velmi důležité pro uskutečnění expedic DofE.

Odpoledne jeli všichni vlakem do Srbska a poté pěšky do kempu, kde strávili noc ve stanech, naučili se bezpečně používat plynový vařič a procvičili si čtení z map. Druhý den absolvovali 15 km dlouhou procházku s veškerým vybavením na zádech.

Poslední část proběhla ve středu opět v Praze a byla ve znamení hledání pokladu. Studenti strávili den prohlídkou Starého Města a jeho věží a dozvěděli se mnohé o středověké kultuře, která je důležitou součástí výuky češtiny a dějepisu ve 2. ročníku. V Anežském klášteře měli studenti možnost prohlédnout si jak interiér, tak exteriér kláštera, který byl nedávno kompletně zrekonstruován a je cennou ukázkou raně gotické architektury. Součástí dne byl i krátký výlet lodí, při kterém se studenti svými spolužáky kochali krásnými výhledy na Prahu.

YEAR 2/2. ROČNÍK

The CCC stands for cycling, camping and canoeing. Our Year 2 students went on the so-called CCC Basic trip. They learned some camping skills while exploring the beauty of the Šumava area. The leader of the trip was Mr. Gavriněv, who was joined by Year 2 tutors, Mrs Gavriněvová and sport instructors. Everyone had great fun and took away some unforgettable memories. The aim of all the trips is to enable students to gain new experiences and to show them that they can learn a lot out of the classroom. Additionally, trips support community spirit as well as student - teacher relationships.

Zkratka CCC znamená cyklistika, kempování a kanoistika. Naši studenti 2. ročníku se vydali na tzv. základní CCC výlet. Při poznávání krás Šumavy se naučili některým tábornickým dovednostem. Vedoucím výletu byl pan Gavriněv, ke kterému se připojili třídní učitelé 2. ročníku, paní Gavriněvová a sportovní instruktoři. Všichni se skvěle bavili a odnesli si nezapomenutelné vzpomínky. Cílem všech výletů je umožnit studentům získat nové zkušenosti a ukázat jim, že se mohou hodně naučit i mimo vyučování. Výlety navíc podporují ducha komunity i vztahy mezi studentem a učiteli.

YEAR 3/3. ROČNÍK

The trip for the Year 3 students was aimed at connecting their knowledge of science with real life experiences. Students visited a paper factory based in Velké Losiny and a hydroelectric power station, while also exploring the countryside and nature of the Jeseníky mountains during a 15km hike to Praděd. The students were able to enjoy time with their peers and conclude the school year with practical educational experiences with a summer vibe.

Výlet pro studenty 3. ročníku byl zaměřen na propojení jejich znalostí přírodních věd se zkušenostmi z reálného života. Studenti navštívili papírnu ve Velkých Losinách a nedalekou vodní elektrárnu. Zároveň rovněž poznávali krajinu a přírodu Jeseníků během 15 km dlouhého pěšího výletu na Praděd. Studenti si mohli užít čas se svými vrstevníky a zakončit školní rok praktickými vzdělávacími zkušenostmi s letní atmosférou.

YEAR 4/4. ROČNÍK

Students of Year 4 Ignis had long wanted to visit Prague Zoo, so the choice of where to spend their day trip was clear. They took a steamboat from the centre of Prague and then managed to see most of the animals in about four hours. From the top part of the zoo area we enjoyed beautiful views over Prague. It was a great trip and a nice end to the school year.

Studenti 4. ročníku z koleje Ignis už dlouho chtěli navštívit pražskou zoo, takže volba, kde strávit celodenní červnový výlet, byla jasná. Z centra Prahy jeli parníkem a většinu zvířat si pak stihli prohlédnout asi za čtyři hodiny. 

Z horní části areálu zoo si poté užili krásné výhledy na Prahu. Byl to super výlet a hezké zakončení školního roku.
