At the Graduation Ceremony

HM's message

Unless nature has another plan for us, you should be reading this newsletter with a couple of months of lovely warm weather in front of us - maybe a few storms here and there to keep the grass green and temperatures down - but essentially a time to relax and soak up the goodness that only sustained sunny days can bring.

A couple of weeks ago I canoed down the same stretch of the Vltava that our Year 2 students usually visit in June - it was a trip which offered everything that is best about the Czech Republic - the shouting of friendly “ahoj” between passing boaters, a meandering river, beautiful forests, a thunderstorm and of course never quite knowing what to expect around the next corner - which of course has been especially true in the last few years. Uncertainty and the fatigue it brings coloured and characterised the last school year much more than the restrictions. However, I strongly believe that this summer will deliver to us what we all need: a September start with everyone fully refreshed and recharged.

You’ll see from the pages of this newsletter that May and June were peppered with the resurgence of all the things that make the summer term special - a sports day, trips, a proper Graduation Ceremony and other celebrations. We’ve had to re-learn how to organise events that have been cancelled for two years. We’ve re-learnt how to have fun and, of course, how to do real exams! The anxiety surrounding these exams was understandable but they’re done now and we are reminded how we can achieve our goals and overcome our fears.

If you are ECP parents, I really hope the portraits that we paint of your sons and daughters in their end-of-year holistic reports tell their story and show you their development as thoughtful and complex personalities. I think we are quite unique as a school in writing such reports. We consciously choose to focus solely on the students’ academic studies in the February report with a view to advising them how to improve in their subjects. But summer is more a time for broader reflection, a time to sit and think where we got to and where we might next want to go - that is the thought we like to leave students with.

This can’t be done in an evening or a weekend; it takes time. Despite political and cultural differences the long school summer holiday is a global phenomenon for children - for me a recognition of the benefit of learning that takes place outside the classroom - from cultural experiences, such as visiting temples, museums, exhibitions, to physical experiences, such as climbing mountains, swimming in the sea, walking in the forest, building dams in rivers, to moments of reflection and peace: reading or watering plants.

The sun is the greatest giver of energy and the summer the gift of time to reflect, recoup, and recharge. I wish you all the best … before we start all over again in September!!!

Nejistota a z ní plynoucí únava zabarvily a charakterizovaly minulý školní rok mnohem více než různá covidová omezení.
