CBD Excursion
May 2022, Happy Term 2.
Dear CSC,
I would, once again like to acknowledge and honour the achievements of our cohort, courtesy of the Mathematics Faculty and with the Year 9 Pure Maths class of Semester 1, 2022.
May hour~
soon the Melbourne skylines fill
of thousand stars
I write this in reference to the Melbourne CBD Excursion conducted on May 22, 2022 during Week 4. More excitedly I am pleased to announce this excursion as a first of a series of excursions, in particular with a Year 9 elective after 2 years of Remote Learning.
As we know, with maths and the study of maths, it is not just formulas or complex tests or exams that we have to ‘memorise’ or ‘just learn’ off the board, but with Pure Maths as the name suggests, is really more of maths that involves critical thinking, creative arts and projects. In the case of the CBD project carried out, the students have worked on their project in which they would visit various and important landmarks of the CBD.

Thus, with great pride and honour once again I would like to summarise the breakdown of the five sites visited:
Site 1 Federation Square: Analyzing designs of panels and triangles and ‘squares’ of the sandstone walks.
Student Josh Dooley of 9A measuring up ‘angles’ of the sandstone square walk tiles. Note the Right Angled Triangle formed from the Rulers

Site 2 Melbourne Cathedral (exterior): Observing spires, glass panes, trefoil and quatrefoil designs and arches of the building exterior.

Site 5 Melbourne Central Cone Tower: Observing a 200+ meter tower and estimating the volume of the famous ‘cone’
Site 6 RMIT Storey Hall: Students took photos of the Penrose (a special type of tiling) designs in front of Storey Hall, noting down the Rhombuses and Kite designs which they will work on their tiling designs of their project in the next few weeks.

Likewise I would like to commemorate the students on the excursion whom performed quite well and were outstanding ambassadors (and volunteers for group photos) being: students Hayden Malysz and Ella Panuve of 9I, Nicholas Fenwick of 9C and Josh Dooley of 9A in particular for being great helpers on the day as well (and special mention to student Josh whom offered even to get food for Miss Watts and Mr. Wu).
With the final stop at Melbourne Central for an hour long lunch break, the group did a final pose in front of the Melbourne Central Tower / Old Lead Factory before departing for CSC on the home stretch. Needless to say, we managed to even arrive back at school at least 30 minutes earlier than expected!

On a side note, who could not forget various buildings and stops and Chinatown itself in which we passed along the way with our stops which I am sure students would too have noted as well?
Finally also, I would like to extend a massive acknowledgement to Mr. Michael Fowles, Ms. Hannah Atkinson, Mr. Chris Trevenna, and Miss Tyler Watts and who could forget the cooperation of the families of the students of the class whom were able to make the CBD excursion possible 🙂 fingers crossed stay tuned with another group of students in Semester 2 2022!!! 🙂
Here is to the rest of Term 2 2022!
