Term 3 in Grade 5 

The Grade 5 team warmly welcomes an exciting Term 3! This term brings many interesting events and opportunities to the Grade 5 cohort. We are very excited to present the students with the following excursion, incursions and events: 

  • Weeks 1/2: VSSEC M.A.R.S. Base Station Exploration Excursion
  • Weeks 4/5: Robogals Incursion 
  • Week 5: School Athletics Carnival
  • Week 6: Money Talks Incursion
  • Week 7: Book Week Celebrations 
  • Week 8: Orchard to Plate 
  • Week 10: Open Share Afternoon 

Literacy

Our writing focus continues to be the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing as well as using strategies from The Writing Revolution to further develop skills. Strengthening of various comprehension strategies remain at the core of our reading practice and will be enhanced further through the implementation of Literature Circles. During Term 3, students will:

  • continue developing Sentence Fluency and Conventions through The Writing Revolution 
  • explore the traits Word Choice and Presentation through a variety of writing genres
  • engage in reading activities that are linked to Earth’s place in space 
  • craft a persuasive piece on Mars

Numeracy

Students will continue to participate in scaffolding numeracy lessons targeting their multiplicative thinking. In addition, the areas that will be covered this term are:

  • multiplication and division - applying strategies to solve problems
  • volume and capacity - creating a Mars base station
  • coding - location and algorithms through use of Spheros 
  • simple financial plans 

Unit

Our units of study will explore multiple topics this term such as Global Citizenship, Australian Levels of Government and Earth and space science.  Students will develop an understanding of the following concepts:

  • what it means to be a Global Citizen
  • Human Rights & the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals
  • why a country needs a system of government
  • Australia's system of government and the three levels of government
  • Earth’s place in space 
  • Mars exploration

Homework

Homework will commence in Week 2. There is a slight change in the requirements for homework this term, allowing student voice in the reading activity they choose each week. Students are expected to:

  • read for a daily minimum of 30-40 minutes, 5 times a week
  • complete a reading task of their choice from the grid provided and record details in their log
  • complete at least two Essential Assessment tasks each week and record details on the slide provided

Wellbeing

In our Respectful Relationships lessons, students will be looking at:

  • identifying stressors and stress management strategies
  • help seeking and understanding when and who to talk to in order to solve a problem

Camp

In the next few weeks, we encourage payment for those students attending the Grade 5 Camp. The date of camp is October 18th until October 20th (Term 4). The camp this year will be held in Kangaroobie, Princetown. 

 

- A reminder to please hand your child's medical form in by 24th July - next Monday.

- Full payment is required by Friday, 4th August.
