Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 2/Week 6-7

Writing
In writing, last week students were focusing on word choice. They were looking at Tier 1, 2 and 3 words. Students have been working on changing their Tier 1 words into Tier 2 words. Tier 2 words are words that help make writing more sophisticated and interesting, they are a step above the language we use in everyday life. To help them do this, they have been creating word banks of Tier 2 words to use in their writing. Through a passage from ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl students have explored how to write using the 5 senses. They created their own paragraph, using a picture prompt, with a focus on using the 5 senses in their writing. Next week, we will continue our focus on word choice. Revising what we have learnt this week and exploring “showing not telling”.
Reading
Last week in reading we learned how to predict information by using organisational tools. Students developed these skills by using the contents page and index within non-fiction texts. They also practiced these skills online by using homepages and subpages to assist with their navigation. This week in reading we are learning to make authentic connections with what we are reading. Students have been practicing making text-to-text, text-to-world and text-to-self connections with picture books. Throughout our reading lessons students are continually making responses to their good fit books by creating charter profiles, timelines and summaries. Next week, we will continue to work on making connections and we will introduce students to inferring when reading.
Maths
Last week in Maths students worked hard on completing their summative assessments, on Essential assessment, in all three strands of Maths. They were also doing some investigations into perimeter and area. Next week they will continue to demonstrate their understanding of perimeter and area through the use of worded problems.
Inquiry
Last week students completed their Solar System inquiry projects. On Friday, students completed a Gallery Walk around all Grade Five classrooms so they could see what others had produced and provide peer feedback. This week students finished off the unit with a short summative assessment task where they had to use their critical thinking skills to determine and explain what scientific discoveries they believe are the most important. Next week during home learning students will begin our new unit of inquiry "How We Express Ourselves" which will look at how artists convey messages through artwork.
