Benchmark Assessment System

Teachers are currently using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) to assess the students across F-6 in their reading. Our reading assessments provide information on the following:

  • A score of word reading accuracy
  • An analysis of a reader's errors and self-corrections
  • An analysis of the reading strategies used
  • Compehesion of the text (within, about and beyond)

Using a series of established conventions, teachers quickly and accurately record what the reader says as they read a text aloud and then asks a variety of comprehension questions about the what was just read. After the reading, the teacher completes an analysis. This becomes a valuabel tool in the instructional teaching of reading for each child at thier exact point of need.

Meet Michael Salmon...

Did you guess the author in the last newsletter? If you guessed Michael Salmon you would be right. Watch the video to find out about Michael's inspiration for one of his most beloved characters in the 'Monster That Ate Canberra'. We look forward to Michael visiting us at St. Raphael's later in the term.
