Farewell to Mrs Meagan Vidler!

Mrs Meagan Vidler has been successful in getting a permanent Assistant Principal job closer to her home and she will commence at Emmaville Central School at the beginning of Term 2, 2023.

Mrs Vidler has been an extremely valuable asset to our Guyra Central School team over the past 11 years. She has shared her love of learning, imparted her knowledge, inspired and motivated not only our students but all of our staff. We wish Mrs Vidler all the best in her new job.

The Armidale and District National Servicemen's Association Sub-branch Inc (Armidale Nashos) Memorial Service

On Sunday 12th February 2023, The Armidale and District National Servicemen's Sub-branch inc (Armidale Nashos), held a Commemoration Service at the Memorial in Central Park, Armidale.

The Commemoration Service was held in memory of the national servicemen killed in action during World War 2 and Vietnam, and who have passed away since their time in service.

Guyra Central School student leaders were invited to attend the service. Harris Dullaway (School Captain) with Elsa Kliendienst and Lincoln Atkin (Primary Captains) attended the service laying a wreath on behalf of Guyra Central School.

Thank you to Harris, Elsa and Lincoln for repesenting Guyra Central School at The Commemoration Service. We would additionally like to acknowledge Mrs Jo Dullaway and Mrs Michelle Kliendienst who attended the service with Harris, Elsa and Lincoln and provided photo's and a video.

Primary and Secondary Swimming Carnivals

During week 3, Guyra Central School held both our Primary and Secondary Swimming Carnivals. The weather was perfect for both the Primary and the Secondary Carnivals and with high levels of participation from both primary and secondary students, our carnivals were both a huge success.

Thank you to our Sport Co-ordinators, Mr Stephen Alletsee (primary) and Mrs Linley Ryan for all of the organisation of each carnival. Additionally, we would like to acknowledge all of our staff, students and staff who assisted throughout the day.

On the 8th of February 2023, Guyra Central attended the Secondary Swimming Carnival. It was an eventful day and we all had a great time. Adaiah Galindo and Makayla Galindo both attended the carnival and swam more then anyone at the event. The favourite event was the year 12 floaty race. Best dressed was Treigh Bonser-Karhu from Malpas. Malpas won the Swimming Carnival leaving with 246 points, Niccoola in 2nd with 219 points and Chandler coming in 3rd with 156 points. Thank you to Mrs Linley Ryan and to all the other staff for organising this event. We all enjoyed our day.

Secondary North West Swimming

On the 7th of March a small squad of talented swimmers competed at the NW swimming trials held in Armidale. All swimmers were very competitive on the day, representing our school very impressively. Our boys freestyle relay team swam second in their event and will now go on to Sydney to swim at state level in May. Many thanks to the parents who came to support our students and to Mrs Gwyn Pearson for helping supervise our outstanding students.

Primary Show Excursion

On Friday we went to the Guyra Show.

We looked at the sheep and cows and we also looked at our artworks. We won a ribbon in the 'big art' section. We spent our money on show bags fairy floss and snow cones. We had a good time.

For the Guyra show we put in artwork our class had worked on of our faces and what we look like. We put in dragon eyes artworks and one big artwork that our class had made. Our big artwork had an Australian theme and our artwork had Australian animals popping up. We went in the hall and saw all the great artworks that we did. We went outside to go see what there was at the show this year. Some of our class went to go get a show bag, some bought food to eat and some went to buy a drink.

Secondary Agriculture - Guyra Show

On the 17th of February over 30 students from Guyra Central School took part in volunteering and junior judging events throughout the day. There were many successes and the results of the judging are attached below. Special mention must be made to our volunteering students who assisted very ably and contributed much to the success of the show. Blake Phillips and Leigha McElroy were particularly helpful when volunteering in the pavilion and at the sheep judging.

Our students participated to a very high standard and are commended on their fantastic behaviour and helpfulness. Thanks also to Mrs Kay Smith for assisting with supervision and to Gwyn Pearson for all of her ongoing work to make these events a success for our students.

Hospitality Students - Guyra Show

Our secondary Hospitality students attended the Guyra show to view the cooking section in the pavilion and to provide catering. Nioka Levy (Year 12) and Claire Flynn (Year 12) were very interested to taste the variety of jams and were taught how to judge them.

Tristan Bull (Year 12), Courtnie Ward (Year 12) and Indiana Gosper (Year 12) prepared sandwiches and served customers morning tea and lunch. Tristan, Courtnie and Claire were each efficient at using a cash register. It was a great day and many laughs and conversations were had along the way.

The Hospitality Class would like to thank Ms Joanne Presnell for her support and guidance on the day and Miss Wilson who attended the Guyra Show with our Year 12 Hospitality students.

Year 11 Standard English

Year 11 Standard English have been learning how reading a wide variety of texts can influence and improve their writing. They were given a task to compose a creative piece (narrative, poetry or visual) about a social, political or cultural issue that mattered to them. Jada chose to write a poem about gun violence in American schools. I will hopefully be sharing more of our students’ work in their English classes with you as the year progresses.

UNIVERSITY ROADSHOW 2023

On Monday the 20th of February Guyra Central School students from Years 10, 11 and 12 travelled to Armidale to join students from other schools at the 2023 University Roadshow hosted by O’Connor Catholic College.

A series of presentations were delivered by several universities including UNE, Newcastle University and Southern Cross University. Following these presentations students were given time to speak with the representatives of the various universities and ask them questions related to university life, courses available, fees and charges, accommodation options and many other things.

It was a great opportunity for our students to engage with representatives from the universities, to get a better understanding of what to expect if they were to head to university.

Lions Youth of the Year - Zone Finals

The Lions Youth of the Year  program has a proud history in encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australian students approaching the end of their high school years.

By emphasising qualities like contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, Youth of the Year aims to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians.

On Saturday 18th February 2023, Dante Lloyd attended the combined Zone final of the Lions Youth of the Year contest at the Armidale Bowling Club. Dante was interviewed by three judges before completing the public speaking section of the event infront of an audience of Lions Club members and family.

Dante concluded the competition as runner-up. Congratulations to Dante on this accomplishment.

Secondary Touch Trials

Open Boys Touch Trials – Zone

Congratulations to the Guyra Open boys who traveled to Inverell to participate in the Zone Touch trials. Archie Dowden, Brodi Campbell, Rave Brazier, Blake Phillips, Harry Purvis and Darcey Heagney (plus Brendon Landsborough) played several games of Touch in very hot conditions, before the selectors chose 26 players to compete in the possible and probables match up. Guyra was successful in getting 5 players into the play offs before a New England Team was announced to compete at the North West trials in Inverell on the Monday 13th March.

All player’s level of sportsmanship and commitment was truly commendable Congratulations to the following students on their selection in the New England Zone team - Archie Dowden, Brodi Campbell and Darcey Heagney.

A big thank you to all staff who made this possible, especially Kylie Sutton and Linley Ryan.

Congratulations to Darcey Heagney and Harry Purvis who were both successful in securing positions on the North West 16's Touch team. Darcey and Harry attended the NSW CHHSA State Carnival in Nelson Bay during Week 10.

CHSSA North West Rugby League Trial

Several Secondary students from GCS travelled to Coonabarabran to participate in the North West Rugby League Trials in week 10.

Harry Purvis and Linjarra West participated in the 15's and Rave Brazier, Archie Dowden, Brodi Campbell and Oscar Atkin in the 18's.

All the boys played exceptionally well throughout the day and represented our school with pride. Congratulation to Brodi Campbell who was successful in being selected in the Northwest/Western - Greater Regional trials to be held in Gilgandra 27th and 28th April next term.

Year 8 Aquatics

Term 1 for Year 8 students saw them participating in an Aquatics program from the PDHPE Syllabus. The girls and boys participated in safe entry, swimming laps, rescue, treading water and then playing underwater hockey and water polo. They had a great time enjoying the Guyra pool.

Alan Tongue 14's Rugby League , Girls 14's & 16's League Tag

On Wednesday 5th April the 14 boys Rugby League and 14 and 16 girls League Tag competed in the Alan Tongue 10 a side competition at UNE Armidale. The girls played very well and improved with each game they played. The 14 boys also improved throughout the day and only went down in one game by 1 point against McCarthy CC. They had a win against O'Connor 14-4, Oxley HS 17-0, Peel HS 12-4.

Unfortunately, the boys missed out on progressing to the finals, but they had a great day and are looking forward to the next Rugby League event.

The students showed excellent sportsmanship and outstanding support for each other as a whole group. Guyra Central School would like to acknowledge the work of the staff that made this excursion possible, Mrs Ryan, Nadine and Peter.

CHSSA Table Tennis Knockout Competition

On Monday the 3rd of April our Table Tennis Team represented Guyra in Armidale. Our team included: Toby Handebo, Darcy Grills, Will Hutton, Tyler Beard and Noah Brennan. We played Farrer, Tamworth High, Oxley and Armidale High. Our team played very well, winning the first round 4:0. We went on to win against Oxley. Lost to Farrer (only by a margin) and Lost to Armidale who won the competition overall. Darcy remained undefeated until the final where he was up against steep competition from the Armidale team, much older and more experienced, taking him out at the end. A special thanks to Peter Presnell for all of his help on the day and congratulations to our participating studem who displayed tremendous sportsmanship on the day. Thank you to Mrs Linley Ryan for initiating the competition. Considering the age of our younger players, it is well worth persisting in this wonderful sport in the future.

Transition 2023

It is with great excitement that we welcome our Transition class for 2023 to Guyra Central School. We have had a fantastic start to the year, and I have been so amazed at how well our Transition students are settling into each school day.

Mrs Sally McElroy and I will be working with our transition students every Tuesday and we also have Indiana Gosper assisting, as part of her Year 12 VET Course.

This term, we have been getting to know each other and our school routine. This includes fruit and movement in the morning. We read a story and then engage in a creative art

experience based on the book. We have started rotation style learning, with Indi, Sal and I working with a group each. This includes fine motor tasks, name writing and work on developing phonological awareness. We are currently spending our breaks at the indoor and outdoor sensory learning areas.

Once we have settled in, we hope to extend our play to the main outdoor area.

We look forward to the rest of the year and seeing your child develop within our learning environment. We must also thank our older students who have been so caring and helpful towards our transition students.

Mid-Term PBL Reward Session

Students were rewarded for their hard work and consistently displaying our core values of Pride, Respect and Responsibility with a Mid Term Reward Session. Students were able to take a break from their learning and able to choose to participate in a range of exciting activities for the afternoon. It was a fantastic afternoon!

Stage 1 - Sport

Stage 1 Lime have been learning the two handed strike and refining their fine motor skills in sport.

They practiced their skills using the new K-2 T-Ball set.

Clean up Australia Day

Although we know the worlds environmental challenges can’t be solved in one day, our primary students got their gloves on and armed themselves with garbage bags on Friday 3rd March to participate in Clean Up Australia Day around our school.

Congratulations to all of our primary students for their efforts in the cleaning up and making our school not only look beautiful but to take one small step in doing our bit for the environment.

Apiarist Industry Visit

On the 9th of March 2023, our Year 8 Technology class travelled to Mr Michael and Mrs Allison Colvin's property "High Meadow" to learn all about keeping bees and harvesting honey. Students were actively engaged with frame building, capping, extracting, creaming, hive management and of course tasting the delicious honey produced on the farm. Mr Michael Colvin was extremely generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise with our wonderful year 8 students. All students demonstrated full engagement and their behaviour was exemplary.

We are so lucky to live in such a supportive community and we thank Mr Michael and Mrs Allison Colvin for their generosity and for providing this valuable learning opportunity to Guyra Central School students. Thankyou to Mrs Rebecca Smith for all of her work organising this eaducational learning experience and to Mr David Richardson for driving our bus.

NSW State PSSA Cricket Carnival - Ballina

Year 6 Guyra Central School student, Billy Ryan, competed at the State PSSA Cricket Carnival last week in Ballina.

Billy had a couple of great results and experiences for the week.

Day 1- North West were up against the top seeded team Sydney North, Billy opened the batting and held onto his wicket for 23 overs for 10 runs. The team batted out the 50 overs which is a great achievement against Sydney North.

Result: North West scored 10/80, Sydney North 4/81.

Day 2 - North West were up against North Coast, Billy 2 catches. This was North Wests' closest game of the carnival.

Result: North West 10/112, North Coast 10/118

Day 3 - North West were up against Sydney South West, Billy faced 2 very fast and swinging opening bowlers (bowled out for 0).

Result: North West 10/61, Syd Sth West 8/138

Day 4 - North West were up against Riverina, Billy scored 6 not out. North West 10/66, Riverina 4/67

Whilst North West did not get any wins for the week, the boys had many great learning experiences and had a fantastic time together as a team.

PSSA Touch Football Trials

On Monday 14th March 2023, Guyra Central School had eight students attend the PSSA North West Touch Football in Tamworth. Our students played as part of the Armidale Zone team in a GALA day against students from across the North West region. Attending students were playing to secure a position on the North West team to attend the NSW PSSA Championships to be held at St Mary's during Term 2.

Sammy-Rose Dowden was successful in securing a position on the North West Open Touch team. Good luck Sammy-Rose!

Primary Garden

This term primary students have had a great time in the garden and kitchen. We have a thriving vegetable patch which has provided us with a variety of fresh produce to cook and share with students and staff.

We have harvested 62 beetroot! We have used our beetroot to cook to into delicious chocolate brownies.

We caramelised onions and used them to top pizzas along with tomatoes, basil, spinach and parsley.

We have peeled and sliced cucumbers to share.

Weekly PBL Award winners have enjoyed making giant biscuits as a special treat.

It has been a joy to share in our students excitement and enthusiasm for these activities and watch our students proudly share the food they have prepared with other students and staff.

Uralla Goldfields

The year 11 Earth & Environmental Science class went on excursion to the Uralla Goldfields on Thursday 16th March 20233 to supplement their unit on the Earth's resources. The students used different techniques to scour the river for zircon crystals, mineral clusters and gold.

Year 11 were given a tour of the geology of the Mount Mutton area north of Uralla where they were also told about the history of the gold rush that occurred there in the mid 1800's.

Students returned with rock and mineral samples to study closer in class.

Stage 3 CAPA (Music)

This term Stage 3 have been learning to play djembes (african drums) as part of CAPA. They have done a fantastic job learning the base and tone of the drums. Stage 3 are hoping to perform and item later in the year in our Creative Arts Night.

Harmony Day - A Day of Celebrations

Brian Irving Commemorative Garden Opening

Over the years, past and present Guyra Central School students were lucky enough to be involved in the long partnership Mr Brian Irving shared with our school. Brian, who many of us remember as a generous, wise and collaborative, artistic spirit with wicked sense of humour has left his amazing artistic talent throughout our school. On Tuesday 28th March 2023, we opened our Brian Irving Commemorative Garden. Within this garden sits 3 artworks that were created by Brian, for the school, to celebrate Pride, Respect and Responsibility. Guyra Central School would like to thank our Elders, community members and Brian's family for joining us to celebrate Brian and his partnership with Guyra Central School.

Primary Quad Mural Launch

On Tuesday 28th March 2023 Guyra Central School invited our community into the school to celebrate another very special occasion at Guyra Central School.

In response to the request of the Primary Quad Team to beautify our Primary Quad back in 2020, Guyra Central School unveiled our refurbished Primary Quad which is now home to 6 beautiful murals created by Mrs Kay Smith and our team of talented primary students.

Mr Brian Irving and Mrs Kay Smith enjoyed a long and very productive partnership. Together they held art workshops with our K-12 students which led to over 200 wonderful images being produced. Some of the student created images have been included into the murals.

Guyra Central School and together with our students they have created the beautiful Guyra ‘season themed’ murals. Kay is a very skilled artist and was a fantastic mentor to our students who have helped contribute to the murals.

Our finished product is nothing short of amazing and has completed an already amazing space for our students to enjoy now and well into the future.

We encourage our community if they are visiting Guyra Central School to ask at the office to be taken to have a look at the murals.

Harmony Day

Guyra Central School celebrated Harmony Day to completed a very special morning at our school on Tuesday 28th March 2023.

At Guyra Central School we have over 400 people on site every day. As a school we represent many beliefs and ideas and cultures. We work continually as a school community to embrace equity and excellence and a pursuit of acceptance and celebration of individual and collective differences.

Our school celebrated with our Harmony Day Assembly, the option for our students to dress in orange or cultural attire and a whole school morning tea.

Year 11 Agriculture - Urandangie Farm Visit

Last Thursday, the Year 11 Agriculture class took part in a farm visit to 'Urandangie' for their first assessment of the year. Mr Bill Perrottet spent the morning going over his property enterprises and students learnt about improved pastures, grazing management and water hydrant systems. We viewed the animal enterprises and learnt about weed management using goats. Students were very well behaved and learnt a lot during the visit.

Caring for our Community - SRC Raise Money for McLean Care

Last year Guyra Central School Secondary SRC students held a pancake breakfast to raise money for Kolora residents at McLean Care in Guyra. The students raised a total of $150.00. Our School Captains Harris Dullaway and Nioka Levy were very proud to present the money plus a certificate of donation to the residents and Mrs Sonya Wallbridge in a short presentation last week.

Mrs Wallbridge was very pleased with the donation and said that it would be used for a number of activities involving the residents. The donation to McLean Care was a student decision.

Each year the SRC raises funding for a National Cause, this year we are raising money for the anti-bullying campaign - Do it for Dolly. We will also raise money for a local community cause and a school project.

Our final Assembly for Term 1 was held on Friday 31st March 2023. Stage 2 and Early Stage 1 entertained our parents/carers with their class performances.

Our K-6 students have been busy working on Easter Hats which they proudly wore at our 'Easter Hat Parade' following our Primary Assembly. To complete a busy morning, our K-6 students enjoyed seaching for eggs in our Easter egg hunt.

End of Term PBL K-6 Disco

To finish off a fantastic start to 2023 we celebrated our K-6 students and all of their hard work and rewarded our students for consistently demonstrating Guyra Central Schools core values during Term 1 with a Disco.

Stage 3 students are busy raising money for their Canberra excursion this year and were responsible for co-ordinating the event. Our younger students had a fantastic time dancing and participating in activities during our PBL Reward Disco.
