Shaelea Hilliard, Year 12

Shaelea tames the Lions

On Sunday 14th March, Shaelea Hilliard - Year 12 student and member of our Student Leadership Executive Committee - represented Sandringham College at the Lions Club Youth of the Year Zone Final.

The first Sandringham College student to reach this stage of the Youth of the Year competition, Shaelea was the Overall Winner for the Beaumaris and Brighton Club finals held in February, qualifying for the Zone level competition where she faced the Overall Winners from other local clubs.

Shaelea’s speech on the Importance of Second Language Learning was a passionate call to all Australians to recognise the crucial nature of expanding our linguistic horizons, both to forge stronger relations within our multi-cultural country, and with the aim of becoming true global citizens. Referencing her own experience of cultural exchange in France, Shaelea further presented an overview of what measures Australian schools could play in encouraging young people to develop a love for learning second and third languages to expand their horizons.

Shaelea represented herself and Sandringham College with true pride, and has noted that she will continue to spread her passion and love of languages to other young people in Australia and abroad.
