Visual thinking strategies through the Arts

Two weeks ago, Sue and Claudia attended two days of Professional Development at the Incinerator Gallery. The focus of the PD was on Visual Thinking Strategies.

Visual Thinking Strategies is a child centred pedagogy lead by an educator to facilitate and encourage an inquiry approach in learning through ‘open-ended ‘activities.  The facilitator engages and acknowledges the student by posing questions, getting clarification, and allowing the student to justify their thoughts through the sharing process.

Visual Thinking Strategies improves students' ability to observe, think, listen and communicate what they visualise within the imagery. It develops and focuses on skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaborative learning, risk-taking, and effective communication in which, challenges and influences a child’s learning development.

It was a very interesting two days. We will be implementing it, in some Creative Arts sessions. As a results of the PD, we have established an ongoing partnership with the Incinerator Gallery.
