On August 15, the Western Church celebrates its belief that ‘the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.' It is often tempting to arrive at an image of Mary ascending to heaven in clouds of glory surrounded by angels. Baroque artists loved the idea.
