Reflection

In future years Eileen O'Connor may become Australia's second official saint. She was born in 1892 but badly injured her spine when she was only three. She suffered great pain for the rest of her life. With the help of a priest, Fr James McGrath, she founded a community of women, Our Lady's Nurses for the Poor, to care for sick people in their own homes. She died in Sydney in 1921 when she was only 28.

Before Jesus made big decisions, he spent time on prayer, sometimes for the whole night. He did that before choosing twelve followers to be his co-workers. God's people had been made up of twelve tribes, so Jesus called twelve disciples to be his companions. They were a sign of the new people of God that Jesus was calling together. The Twelve came to be called apostles.

Prayer

Loving God,

we thank you for sending apostles

to the whole world.

May we always welcome

those who bring your good news.

Help us to listen to their teaching.

Call on us, one day, to become apostles, too.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
