HPE NEWS

The PE department is looking forward to an energetic and action packed year. There will be many fun sporting activities on offer for the students as well as their normal PE classes.

PE CLASSES

During Term 1 students in Years 3 – 6 will be developing their athletic skills – discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and sprints. Whilst the Year 1 and 2 students will be participating in activities designed to develop the fundamental motor skills – throwing, catching, ball bounce, kicking, leaping, striking and dodging.

It is important for students to come to PE classes appropriately attired and prepared for physical activity. We ask that parents/guardians ensure that their child:

Wears runners for PE –this is or safety reasons and to ensure that the surface of the gym floor is not damaged.
Has their hat – most PE classes will be outside during Term 1.
Brings a water bottle for hydration

Notes: Parents are asked to write a note for their child when they are unable to participate in PE classes.

YEAR 6 WATER SAFETY – MOTHER’S BEACH 13TH – 17TH FEBRUARY

The Year 6 students had a wonderful time and extremely valuable educational experience at Mills Beach last week. The students participated in activities that enabled them to implement and expand on the water safety skills they learned at the beginning of the year in the pool sessions. In addition, the program provided students with challenges, team building skills, cooperation, life skills and experiences which the students will be able to ‘draw’ upon to complete integrated classwork.

Carnival Day was on Friday. Competing for their House, students participated in 5 different activities – Wading, Nipper Boards, Surf Skis, Sprint/Relays and Flags.

All students then participated in an Iron Nipper. Congratulations to the Top 4.

MURDOCH DISTRICT SWIMMING TRIALS

On Thursday 23rd February, when most students were still asleep, 26 students from Years 4 – 6 participated in the Murdoch District Swimming Trials at the Pines Pool. For some of these students it was their first time competing in a 50 metre outdoor pool. All students were great ambassadors for our school, giving 100% effort and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship at all times.

Students highlighted in “bold” will now be representing the school at the Divisional competition on Thursday 9th March; we wish them well and look forward to reporting on their achievements.

Thank you to all the parents who transported their children at such an early hour to allow them to compete for the school; it was very much appreciated.

HOUSE TWILIGHT CARNIVAL (PREPS – YEAR 2) – THURSDAY 16TH MARCH

TheTwilight House Carnival has been organised for the Junior School students. We are looking forward to our students participating in this carnival. Please return the consent form, indicating you and your child’s attendance to ensure the necessary arrangements can be made so the carnival can run smoothly.

Don’t forget:

Bring snacks/dinner and drink bottle (arrive at 5:00 pm)
Encourage students to wear their House colours, shorts and runners.
Parents should be prepared to join in.
Activities start at 5:30 pm.
Emphasis is on FUN and PARTICIPATION

YEAR 6 SUMMER SPORT

During this term, each Friday morning, Year 6 students have been training for the Interschool Summer Sport competition.

On Friday 31st March, the students will participate in the District Summer Sport Lightning Premiership competition. Students will be competing against teams from Baxter PS, Langwarrin PS, Pearcedale PS, Somerville PS, Somerville Rise PS and Woodlands PS.

It is an exciting time for all students and a wonderful experience. Our philosophy with Interschool Sport at LPPS is for students to have a positive experience with team sport. Therefore our emphasis is on:

Participation
Developing an understanding of the sport and working co-operatively in a team.
Demonstrating good sportsmanship at all times – playing by the rules, supporting teammates, acknowledging the achievements of the opposition, winning graciously and losing with dignity.
Fun

Whilst it is nice to win, the above mentioned takes priority – winning is a bonus!

ATHLETICS - Wednesday 5th April March at Ballam Park.

The House Athletics Carnival will be held on the last Wednesday of term. A consent form will be sent out next week.

Just a few pointers and suggestions to assist parents with student preparation:

Students are encouraged to dress in their House Colours; school uniform if students don’t have suitable clothing in their House Colours. House Bibs will be provided for those students.
Students can spray their hair with house coloured hair spray, but this must be done at home.
Footwear – runners
Slip, slop slap – students to wear school hat (unless they have a broad-rimmed hat in house colours) and sunscreen.
Small back pack – containing their snack, lunch and a drink bottle. Water is most suitable.
Asthmatics – if your child is an asthmatic, make sure they carry their ‘puffer’

Parent Helpers are a valuable asset to the smooth running of activities. Please return the note with your child if you are able to help on the day.
