Middle School News/Events

Dear Middle School Parents/Carers and Students

As we approach the middle of Term 1, I wanted to take a moment to update you on the exciting things happening at Frankston High School and go over some important information. Our students have been settling in well and have been actively engaging in their academic and extracurricular pursuits.

We encourage our students to continue to prioritise their academic pursuits while also taking advantage of the various opportunities available to them outside of the classroom. We are confident that with hard work and dedication, our students will achieve great things this academic year.

Congratulations to the following students on their sporting achievements

Lachlan Wright | Year 9

Lachlan has been selected to play in the State Championships for the Southern Mariners, held in Geelong, in April. If successful, they will go on to represent Victoria at the Nationals in May, to be held in Adelaide.  Lachie has also been invited to compete in an Australian team in the USA in June. He will be playing in tournaments in San Diego then on to Orange County to play in the renowned Firecracker National Tournament. Congratulations Lachie, good luck in the State Championships and we wish you all the best with your future competitions!

Joash Xavier | Year 9

Joash has been successfully selected to participate in an Under 16 Baseball representative team that will compete in the 2023 PONY League Asia Pacific Zone Baseball Tournament held in Japan in June. Congratulations and good luck Joash!

Hunter Richardson | Year 10

Well done to Hunter Richardson of Year 10 who has made the made the School Sports Victoria Softball 18 & Under State Team.

Congratulations Hunter!

Congratulations Jimi, we wish you all the best with your future competitions!

Year 10 Work Experience

The Year 10 Work Experience Program is a mandatory one week placement, which Year 10 students are required to undertake with an employer. We advise our students to find a placement that will provide an insight into the industry which relates to their course and career interests.

The Work Experience Program for 2023 will be conducted during the last week of Term 2, Monday 19 to Friday 23 June 2023. In certain circumstances, where students are unable to participate in the program during Work Experience Week, students may be allowed to find placements during the June/July, September/October holidays or at the end of the year during Early Commencement. This requires approval from the Middle School Principal and Head of Year 10.

Work Experience Arrangement Form

Work experiences arrangements in Victoria and reciprocating state must be made using the Work Experience Arrangement Form. All sections of this form must be completed, signed and dated by the Employer, Parent/Carer, Student and Principal before the work experience can commence. Return to the General Office or email workexperience@fhs.vic.edu.au by Friday 10 March 2023. Please Note: Once this form has been signed by the Principal, this document will provide your student with Work Cover and Public Liability Insurance.

Students are expected to make their own arrangements with employers. We do not encourage parents/carers to undertake this task on behalf of their child. We strongly advise our students to plan ahead and make enquires with prospective employers well in advance. We encourage students to think about their recent subject selections, career action plan and use their Morrisby reports for ideas on possible placements that they would like to explore. Students can also use the Career Targets tool for inspiration. This is located on Frankston High School Careers website. https://www.fhscareers.com/for‐students/career‐targets

We appreciate students may already have part-time jobs and are developing their work related skills. However, we believe students need to explore beyond these realms and into future possibilities. For this reason, students are not permitted to undertake the mandatory Work Experience Program placement with their current employers, as this contradicts the aims of the program.

Our Work Experience Coordinator is Ms Debbie James and is available to answer any questions and can be contacted via email djames@fhs.vic.edu.au

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS/EVENTS

Year 10 | Challenge Accepted

On Wednesday 8 February, the Year 10 Team Leaders ran the first Year 10 Challenge Accepted session for the year. Year 10 students had a Mindset Mastery session with a presentation in Period 1 run by facilitators Taela & Brad Sykes. Period 2 teachers took groups back to class where students completed reflection activities and set a school goal and personal goal for the year. Student feedback was extremely positive about the session, and some of their takeaways were the importance of having a growth mindset and setting up goals to focus on for Year 10 throughout the year. A big thank you to Ms Paige Jessulat, Mr James Cameron, and Mr Tyler Sawrey for all their efforts in organising a great session for students!

Year 9 Students  | Victorian Young Leaders Global Youth Forum

On Wednesday 29 March, 17 selected Year 9 students will be participating in the VYL Global Youth Forum. The forum is designed to deepen student understanding of identity, belonging, culture, globalisation, and what it means to be a global citizen. Victorian students will have the opportunity to connect with peers from across the Asia-Pacific online during this program to collaboratively explore these topics. Throughout the program students engage in a range of activities and regular breakout rooms in small groups with peers from a range of other schools and countries.

Year 9 LEAD Camp | REFLECTIONS

Group 1 Camp Reflection

On Tuesday 21 February, we had the amazing opportunity to go to the Year 7 Camp. We ran activities and we all tried to show great leadership skills by encouraging and engaging with the Year 7 students throughout the day.

We all had a lot of fun attending this wonderful experience and we would love to do it again if the opportunity arose! The kids were all super invested in the games and were cheering each other on. They all supported the students who got given the prizes at the end of the games. It was so great to see them working with students they wouldn’t necessarily work with normally. Making new connections and helping break the ice and make new friends. Which in turn will make the transition to high school much smoother. Thank you to Mrs Bahramis for taking us. | Petra Cresswell, Taylah Charles, Izzy Manor, Michaela Fitzpatrick, Bailey Schmidt, and Tessa Symonds.

Group 2 Camp Reflection

On 23 February, our group of LEAD students went to Year 7 camp for the day to run activities, with the aim of connecting with the Year 7 students and helping them to connect with each other. We organized and executed games like number soccer, capture the flag, octopus, and icebreaker activities. Our main takeaway from the day is that being flexible and organized is a must, especially in large groups. Overall, it was a really fun and enjoyable day, and if we ever had the chance to do something like this again, we definitely would! We would like to thank Mrs Bambridge for taking us on the day. | Eliza Patston, Issy Shine, Oliver Hallam, Amy Konopcik, Ruby Pierce and Matilda Garrad.

Group 3 Camp Reflection

As part of this semester’s LEAD Class, we accompanied the Year 7 students on their camp on Tuesday 28 March. It was a great learning experience as we were able to use our leadership skills to help and run activities for the students. As leaders, it was our responsibility to create a positive environment, and help to make sure that the students had an unforgettable experience. It was enjoyable to enhance our previous leadership skills throughout the day, as well as develop our relationships with the Year 7 students.
During the day, our groups offered multiple choices of games to the students, and prizes for the best players. It was nice to see how they bonded as a group and had fun. It was important for us to ensure that all the students felt included and valued, and we were delighted to see that they all had a great time. Overall, the activities that we ran on Year 7 camp were a success, and we feel that it was a privilege to have been a part of it.   We each enjoyed it immensely, and much appreciated the experience and Mrs Bahramis for taking us. | Eve Kierzkowski, Paige Reynolds, Zoran Jardine, Taj Leete, Lachlan Cooke, Hamish Dunston, Eden McGarrigle-Brown.

Group 4 Camp Reflection

On Thursday 2 March we attended the Year 7 camp at Golden Valley Lodge camp to run activities with the classes. The activities that were ran included octopus, whispers, soccer, a bag of props, and don’t break the frown. At the end of each activity, the classes rotated to different activities and had chances to earn lollies! This created more engagement and a better time.
During the activities our leadership, team work and resilience skills were tested. After the activities, we went inside and played some board games and Simon Says. For lunch, we had some burgers and then went to go and do an activity, then we went back to school with Mr Joyce, who supported us on the day. | Vanessa Laverty, Jack Makey, Lucas Gilbert, Chelea Martin, Ashanti Nesbitt and Trinity Horrobin
