Year 7 - 9 Community
May 2023
During term two, the year nine learning community at Goldsworthy Campus partners with The Gordon TAFE to deliver the Geelong Tertiary Futures Program or GTFP. Spread across the whole term, students complete online learning modules on workplace skills, safety and communication, with the chance to complete two units at a certificate level. Not only do these build practical skills and look great on a resume when applying for jobs and scholarships, they can also give students credit towards their VCE or VM qualifications!
The major highlight of the program for students however are the preview days, heading out to The Gordon City and East campuses for three days of taster programs in an enormous array of possible courses and trades. The students submit their preferences and then gain hands-on and practical experience of what it would be like to study or work in industries as diverse as electrical, early education, carpentry, automotive, screen & media, animal care, hospitality and many, many more.
Our first day at The Gordon was held in week 1 of this term and was a huge success! Students had their induction to the campuses through the traditional scavenger hunt and then completed their first trade preview. On offer for day one were screen & media, cooking, tourism & hospitality, beauty services, carpentry, automotive and bricklaying. As you can see in the photos, students had a fantastic time and were engaged in all their sessions! Our second preview day was just held in week 4, so keep a lookout for more photos soon!
In the 7/8 Communities we use a host of programs to enhance our learning. We use the following from the Google Suite:
We also use programs such as Canva to enhance our publishing and presentation skills.
Here’s what some of our students have to say about their use of Chromebooks.
Luke, Rydar, Aaron and Will - We use Google Classroom on our chromebooks. We did a Slideshow for our Education Research Projects (ERPS). We also did a Science Project on Toys using Tinker CAD (computer aided design).
Jessica & Nayte - We can use music to help with our focus during class and we also use Google docs to publish our work.
Logan - Canva is great for making posters, persuasive images and menus too.
Theams and Japbir - We use our Chromebooks for Maths Pathways which is really convenient and positive outcome
Madelyn - I use Google docs which I find really useful
On Wednesday 17th May, the 10 mentor leaders of year 9 came together for a workshop with Learning Community Leader Mr Bayard and expert visitor from Ed Partnerships Jayne-Louise Collins. Before the workshop, the students had completed learner conversations with Mr Bayard and then led a conversation with one of their classmates. These conversations helped the students collect feedback and perspectives about what it is like to be a Goldsworthy student.
Together with Jayne-Louise, the students spent the day sharing and analysing their findings, identifying the big ideas and what we value as a year 9 community. The final part of the day was then planning a workshop that the students will lead during the next year 9 teachers meeting to share their findings and help them plan actions to make their teaching even better!
Amazing work team!
There were some very creative students decorating their home made cakes and the room was full of peer praise. It is very impressive when students give each other positive feedback, praise and on the odd occasions - commiserations!
Tarligha explained her Dumper Trick Chocolate masterpiece. It was the result of doing research into cake designs. She took a little bit if this and a little bit of that to come up with her own concept. Like many of the others - the outcome was very impressive!

Meanwhile at the GITTC the Year 9 Foods of the world elective were creating a chicken stirfry with Chef Bal. The Year 7 and 8 specialist program the previous day were learning similar skills and the highlight as always is the final flame and toss which is conducted only through supervision.
Some great sounds were coming from the Music Room and on this occasion Tyler was demonstrating his prowess in RAP. Proving his talent was put to test in Food Studies when Chef Bal was told he was a RAPPER - she asked him to prove it! Over a hot stove Tyler went into full flow and flawlessly created a piece about his cooking. Well done.
Accompanying Tyler at Music was Htoo Saw, Hser Nay Bwe Doh and Hae Hsa Ku.
A run around the Trade Training Centre for 7-8 Specialist programs. Peacock and Hendy attend on Fridays while Tallis and Wexford go on Tuesday afternoons.
Having graduated last year, Ty has since moved to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Maths and Statistics. It's not a huge suprise that Ty is studying Maths, his favourite subject at Northern Bay was Specialist Maths.
Ty says, "For my future career, I hope to be able to aspire other students into learning by potentially pursuing a career in education alongside research."
We are so excited for Ty's studies, and we look forward to hearing from him at our upcoming Career Panel for Year 9 Students at the end of the month.
