It has been a great start to the year for our VCE students with the year 12s smashing out sacs out the park and the year 11s getting familiar with VCAA’s system. In week 7 term 1 our year 12 students went on a year 12 camp which involved activities to bring them together, for some of our students this was the last school based camp that they would’ve attended.
This was a great way to bond as a group and get to know one another better as we share this last year of tortuous VCE together. Our year 11 students are getting a taste of being the seniors of Northern Bay College and they are learning from the current seniors of our college. The VCE students finished off their first term with a great day of competition and fun at the Athletics carnival held at Goldsworthy reserve in which all students participating challenged themselves and one another. This was a major indication for the seniors of our college that their time at Northern Bay College has an end date!
“In Year 10 Science, students are learning about key biological concepts around DNA and genetics. This includes understanding what DNA is, what it looks like, what genes are, and how we can use this information to track traits through generations. As part of this work, students completed a strawberry extraction DNA practical, where with the use of various enzymes and chemicals, they were able to isolate the pure DNA of a strawberry!
Students have been really enjoying the practical aspects of science both this term and more broadly across all of Year 10 Science.”
Term 2 year 12 started with a lot to manage. As leaders we recognised that the cohort is in need of a stress reducing and bonding activity. This gave rise to our year 12 girls fitness group, with Stoofa's help we were able to get the program going. Stoofa agreed to lead the sessions and help us achieve what we are looking for. The sign ups occurred through a google group chat to help all members keep up with the program. All members were gifted a towel and a water bottle to bring with them. For the first session, members started on the bikes, treadmills, weights and a jog outside at their own pace.
The fitness group gave students and teachers an opportunity to interact in a different way.

This year in VCE we have seen a lot of work, a lot of effort and a lot of fun! Students are deep into the end of their Unit 1 and Unit 3 studies. It is a busy time of year with camps, SACs and the rapid finish of a very short term! Our teaching team is working with all our students to make sure they can finalise their work. On the student side of the house we have plenty happening as our students are a diverse group. We have taken them to lectures, counselled on careers and are planning a full day at Federation University in June. The always popular snow trip is on the horizon too so plenty to look forward to ahead.
This picture from camp reflects a lot of the semester. - Aimed High, Reached heights, relied upon others support and achieved a great deal in our various subjects and courses.
It would be great if you could also read the page called The New Pathways. That page gives a pictorial representation of the work that went in to the establishment of a new Signage Icon for our Years 11 and 12 students studying the VM or VCP course which is brand new this year. It used to be called VCAL. It has been really successful for our students and the new Pathways page gives some of the evidence for that.
May 25 was the unveiling of our signage and we celebrated with a little bit of a party!
You will see from the following articles that the celebrations on 25 MAY were a short break from a whole range of activities for our senior students
Year 12 Enviro Projects
This semester our year 12 VM students have been conducting an inquiry into sustainability and environmental issues. They have planned a range of actions to take this term (both in school and in the community) such as an educational expo, tree planting at Cowies Creek and multiple beach clean ups.
Building and Construction Immersion Day
Last week the VM students interested in learning more about careers in Building and Construction participated in an immersion day. The students got to tour both residential and commercial building sites, participate in bricklaying activities and talk to a range of industry experts.

Today my fellow VPC classmates and I had the opportunity to construct a garden shed as part of our Community Garden project.
Mr Williams at the GITTC had pre-fabricated the floor, walls and roof. He had everything stacked ready for us to transport to the concrete slab outside Lab 3. Barney and Mark - 2 great College Maintenance staff helped us to load each piece carefully onto the trailer. We travelled slowly to the end of the community garden space where we set each piece aside in readiness.
Forming the walls and door was an easy process. Each piece was numbered so we knew which order we had to attach everything. The roof was the most difficult part. It required a team effort to lift it above the pitched walls. We had to hold onto it while the aluminum roof section was lifted then slid into place and lifted again over the back end wall. We then had to attach the roof.
All in all it was a fun process. At times it was very difficult but we felt we were very productive. Hopefully this build will benefit us in the future.

Students undertaking OE were off on a 2 night camp to the Otways. Widely recognised as one of Australia's most beautiful environments, the photos of the group give some indication of the landscape and environmental issues the students were considering in their studies.
Senior art and technology students had an incredibly successful excursion to Melbourne visiting the Ian Potter Centre and Melbourne Museum,
It was an inspirational visit to engender increased skills, ideas and concepts that students can bring back to school and attempt to put into practice in their own works.
A terrific group of students selected a country and brought ingredients to create a dish for their SAC. We appreciate not only the successes they achieved but also their cooperation in allowing filming as they worked through some of the challenges of creating from a recipe under a test environment.
The video is just over 3 minutes and well worth your time to observe and enjoy.
