Careers and Transition

Congratulations to our students who successfully completed their White Card training

Construction White Card training for our future tradies

On Wednesday 11 May, 19 students from Year 9 to Year 11 completed their White Card training (prepare to work safely in the construction industry) which enables students to enter and work safely on construction sites. This is a mandatory course for anyone seeking to work on a construction site, including construction workers, drivers and security.

The six hour training provided students with an introduction into how to work safely on sites, protective equipment used and safety regulations that must be adhered to on all construction sites. Students successfully gained the nationally recognised Statement of Attainment (CPCCWWHS1001) which many of the students will use to do work experience in the trades and/or to complete the HSC Construction course delivered at school to Year 11 and Year 12 students.

If you are interested in White Card training come to the Library and speak to the Careers and Transition Team to register your interest as further training days can be organised.

Future in Focus

Monday 9 May was an excellent day of career exploration and development for Year 12 students as they took part in the annual Future in Focus Day here at Cecil Hills High School. The Future in Focus Day provides students with the opportunity to investigate various career and post-school pathways, and aims to inspire students to find their purpose.

It was a jam-packed day, beginning with talks from inspirational speaker Glen Gerreyn of the Hopefull Institute and Zane Sabre, entrepreneur and co-owner of Maison de Sabre. Both of these talks highlighted to students the importance of dreaming big, working hard and persevering to bring their plans to life.

Students then spent the middle of the day listening to and engaging with industry guest speakers from a variety of careers, such as law, policing, education, real estate and health, and organisations such as Microsoft, Multiplex and Cummins. It was especially great to have a number of former students give these talks to our Year 12 cohort - a fine example of Cecil spirit. Year 12 were also shown how to navigate the Job Jump website, which is a fantastical career guidance tool that can be used to help students (and their parents) make informed career decisions.

To wrap up the day, Year 12 students considering university post-school attended informative talks from Sydney University, the University of New South Wales, Macquarie University and Western Sydney University, while those considering a vocational pathway attended talks from TAFE, the Australian Defence Force, Endeavour Energy and Internal Freight Transport and Logistics.

Feedback from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive! The Careers and Transitions Team wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all of our guests and staff members who contributed to this fantastic experience for our Year 12 students.

A special thanks to our wonderful Year 11 Hospitality students (and their fabulous teachers) who catered for this event!

A special thanks to our Year 11 Hospitality students (and their teachers Ms Marando and Mr Colussi) for catering for our Future in Focus event.  The food and service was absolutely amazing (as were the barista coffees!).  Our guests were very impressed.

Earn while you learn! School based apprenticeships

Congratulations to all our Year 11 students who have commenced undertaking an SBAT. (School Based Apprenticeship and or Traineeship).  SBAT’s allow students to make an early start on their career whilst they are finishing school. These students are learning to balance school with their work and training, earning whilst learning about a career that interests them and completing a dual qualification (Certificate level) along with their HSC making them work ready when they graduate.

Retail SBATs are available to all Year 10 and 11 high school students in NSW.  They allow students to complete a traineeship while at school and working outside of school hours.  Retailers can offer you a traineeship to complete over two years. e.g., KFC, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks.

Traineeships can be more than just part-time jobs - they’re a great way for students to set up for the career they want and gain a credit of 4 units (2 units in Year 11 and 2 units in Year 12) whilst they are completing their HSC. Retail Traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR if they decide to sit the Retail exam.

Greater Western Sydney Careers Market

On Wednesday 18th May, 126 Year 12 students attended the Sydney Southwest Careers Market Day in Cambridge Park. This event attracted 55 schools and over 6000 students during the 2 days of operation. The students had the opportunity to talk with tertiary providers, trade providers, GTO’s, The Defence Forces, and many private colleges offering everything from drama and dance to computer animation. Our students had the opportunity to ask questions and seek information regarding course requirements for university, how to enrol in TAFE courses, cost of private colleges and pathways they can take to achieve their dream job.

We believe this is one of the best opportunities we can give our students to decide or at least begin to map out a pathway post high school. The students who attended were

very well behaved and appreciated the opportunity provided by the careers team.
