Bottle caps update! – Ending collecting this term (on 18 September)

Thank you to all who have donated so far and we now have so many bottle caps! We have almost reached our school goal of 10,000 bottle caps, but will continue until the last Wednesday of term (18 September 2019). So please continue to bring your milk or juice bottle caps to school and either donate at the office or give to a 1/2 student or teacher.  Please check that they have the Numbers 2 or 4 and the recycle logo on them as these are the caps that can be recycled. If you can, please give them a rinse as well so we don’t have to!

These bottle caps are put through a 3D printer and turned into hands for kids in developing countries who have lost a limb. We have put an ice cream container at the front office, please put your juice or milk bottle caps in there (no metal or tin).  See the website for more information.

They’re Calling On You campaign –Melbourne Zoo update.

Last year students at MPW collected phones for the Melbourne Zoo campaign and if you have any phones that you don’t use anymore, you can place them  in the box at the office.  An update from Melbourne Zoo:

Eastern Lowland Gorillas are on the brink of extinction. You can help protect gorillas in Africa simply by donating your mobile phone.

So far, we've recycled and re-purposed more than 171,000 devices donated by individuals, schools and workplaces. But what's the connection between mobile phones and gorillas?

Green Team Report MPW Show Day 2019

Dear Moonee Ponds West Community,

On Wednesday the 4th of September we had our annual Show Day event. As much fun as it is, Show Day has also been known to generate a lot of waste.

But this year the Green Team was able to help reduce the waste of the event. We did this by creating a ‘sustainability checklist’ that all classrooms received and used. Everyone then did their best to think about the waste that their activity might produce.

Last week at Show Day, we noticed that instead of paper posters, kids found new ways to advertise their stalls, like using chalk and whiteboards.

We also noticed that many kids used upcycled materials in their activities such as cardboard boxes, drink bottles and bottle-caps. There were also many stalls that used re-usable materials such as frypans, mugs and hula hoops.

Lastly, we would like to acknowledge the stalls who went out of their way to create something better for the school and the environment around us. One of these stalls encouraged kids to collect rubbish and trade it for a plant as a prize. Another stall was a competitive rubbish relay. There was also an environmental film festival and website launch! Well done to everyone that got involved!
