Art

Foundation students are using oil pastels to colour a sleeve template. They then make a mono print and a sponge print using only primary colours. Their focus will be on the art elements of line, shape and colour in artworks while developing early skills.

Level 1 begin with a very colourful torn-paper portrait then a mosaic flower collage in opposite complementary colours. Next, they create a very hungry caterpillar and look at autumn tones and patterns in nature.

Level 2 Begin the term with a “vegetable collage” inspired by Italian painter, Giuseppi Arcimboldo. They create critters using an effective paint scraping technique. Students finish by creating a beautiful butterfly based on concentric circles.

Level 3&4 begin by making a two-dimensional sand castle, creating texture by scrunching the paper first and use paint blending techniques to create the background. They then create a beach box from ice-pole sticks.

Level 5 begin the term drawing people in different poses, focusing on posture, proportions and angles. Students then observe perspective to create an illusion tunnel with a photo of themselves in the centre. They create a foil figurine and paint the shadow to complete one artwork.

Level 6 start the term by creating and painting a personalised registration plate that reflects their personality. They focus on font, design and the use of motifs in art. We then try our hand at weaving. Students also create an Andy Goldsworthy inspired nature artwork.

STEAM

This term, students are focusing on ‘Engineering’ (Technology non-digital) and ‘Science’ (Earth Sciences and Physics) components of STEAM.

Foundation students are exploring weather conditions through weather diaries (scientific observations) this term. Using the story of The Three Little Pigs, students have also begun to consider different materials and their usages. Students will design a house made of sticks/leaves/rocks, Lego bricks or straw. Will their house withstand wind (The Big Bad Wolf)?

Year 2 students are exploring push and pull forces (physical science) and applying their learning to a range of scenarios and real-world situations. Students will be designing and creating a simple machine inspire by the creations of Rube Goldberg.

Years 3 and 4 will explore earth sciences learning about the earth rotation, scaled drawings and creating simple space transport models. Students are consolidating the thinking skills associated with identifying questions through observations and hands on experiences, researching and discussions.

Year 5 students are researching the earth, moon and sun rotations and answering proposed questions through research and collaborative discussions. Students will design and make models to represent their findings and incorporate their prior knowledge of pulley systems within their creations. Students will present their models through Claymation stop motion videos to their peers and teachers.

Year 6 students will focus primarily on Engineering and will design and create a bridge which meets a specified community need. Students will fair test their design and present to their classes. There will be a focus on construction material, technical components and technique.

MUSIC

In 2022 Music will be running weekly with Miss Austin. Students across all year levels will be engaging with each of the performing arts curricula.

Foundation

Foundation students will be learning about and playing various percussion instruments as well as exploring the concepts of rhythm, pitch, melody and beat. Foundation students will take part in several performances.

Level 3 and 4 students will be learning about and playing various instruments as well as furthering their understanding of terminology and notation. Students will also further their creative understanding and skills with composition and performances. Level 3 and 4 students will take part in multiple performances.

Level 5 and 6 students will be learning about and playing various instruments as well as furthering their understanding of terminology and notation. Students will also further their creative understanding and skills with analysis, composition and performances. Level 5 and 6 students will take part in multiple performances.

HEPS also provides the opportunity for students to learn a variety of instruments through our independent music teachers. Foundation

Youkoso! (Welcome!) Japanese at HEPS runs as a 6-month program. Weekly lessons are 45 minutes and focus on speaking and play-based learning. The Japanese program is centered around storytelling, where students will explore vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure through a number of stories. Learning will incorporate a range of activities which reflect outcomes set by the Victorian Curriculum. Where appropriate, students will also participate in games, songs and interactive activities. Topic to be explore include: Where are my Stripes?, Tomodachi Tour of Japan, The Farm and Pet Hotel. In addition, students will explore cultural events, such as Setsubun and Tanabata. Learning will incorporate a range of activities which reflect outcomes set by the Victorian Curriculum.

Year 1/2

Youkoso! (Welcome!) Japanese at HEPS runs a 6-month program and weekly lessons run for 45 minutes. Language and culture are taught through stories, songs and games which help reinforce vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Topics covered this year include: Tomodachi Tour of Japan, All Kinds of Fish, and The Mixed Up Chameleon. Students are exposed to kanji and hiragana words.Level 2 students will begin learning hiragana characters, through recognition and tracing. Students will also learn to recognise and use high-frequency topic-related hiragana words. Learning will incorporate a range of activities which reflect outcomes set by the Victorian Curriculum.

Year 3/4

Youkoso! (Welcome!) Japanese at HEPS runs a 6-month program and weekly lessons run for 45 minutes. Language and culture are taught through stories, songs and games which help reinforce vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Students are exposed to Kanji and hiragana words relating to unit topics. Topic covered include: The Konbini, Japanese Classrooms and Classroom Instructions.Level 3/4 are continuing to learn hiragana characters, focusing on recognition and writing. Students will learn more high-frequency words through a range of games, word searches and activities. Learning will incorporate a range of activities which reflect outcomes set by the Victorian Curriculum.

Year 5/6

Youkoso! (Welcome!) Japanese at HEPS runs as a 6-month program and weekly lessons are 45 minutes long. Stories, songs and games are used to teach language and culture. Through a range of unit topics, students are exposed to sentence structures, high-frequency kanji and hiragana. Topics this year include: Pet Fashion, the Sumo Stable, and Splash Poetry. Students will be continuing their learning of hiragana characters, focusing on reading and writing. Learning will incorporate a range of activities which reflect outcomes set by the Victorian Curriculum.

PE (Physical Education)

PE is a major part of learning at HEPS with a focus on developing the gross and fine motor skills along with locomotion. These fundamental skills and movement patterns are learned through a variety of different games and skill specific lessons to ensure all participant are engaged and enjoying their time during PE. If it so happens that we have inclement weather and the gym is occupied the students will be completing theory based Physical Education work within their classrooms.

Term 1 sees the focus for the Foundation students on developing their Fundamental Motor Skills and Movement Patterns with an emphasis on catching, running, balancing, striking, throwing and fine and gross motor skills. These skills are developed through a variety of sequential activities with a focus on doing your personal best.

The Level 1 and 2 students are focusing on continuing to develop their Fundamental Motor Skills and Movement Patterns that they have learned in foundation. through a variety of skills with overall focus of skill development and improvement. These skills are progressed through a variety of activities with attention to keeping control whilst completing skills in a variety of different sporting environments.

Term 1 has the Level 3 and 4 students working on a Striking and Fielding Games Unit. Throughout this unit there will be a major emphasis on the skills of Tee-ball and cricket where we will put these skills into a competitive format. This unit is a great way to blend skills from a variety of sports into one unit of work with a focus on the four r’s of skill development being read, respond, react and recover. We also have emphasis on cross country as we will hold a hole school event early next term.

The Level 5 and 6 are developing their skills through a Net and Wall Games Unit where the students advance their skills and recognise that we can use multiple skills in different sports. With the emphasis of this unit being placed of Tennis and Volleyball, the students begin to understand that the skill development for this sport aids with their enhancements in other net and wall games and interschool sport.
