Student Well-being

Spotlight:

Year 5/6 Community

Focus:  Character Strengths

Throughout the last few weeks of the term during our remote learning program, the Year 5/6 Community has continued their exploration into Character Strengths. Students were asked to consider how they may deal with challenging situations, a topic as prevalent as ever in our current situation amidst the pandemic and remote learning. Students have worked through stress management and understanding the Fight, Flight and Freeze responses that can occur. We have also taken the time to de-stress through the use of meditation guided by the Smiling Minds program which is free to use online. The students in Year 5/6 have been reminded to try and keep their attitude to learning positive and continue to foster their ‘can do’ attitude.

2pm Check Ins

We have continued with our 2pm Check Ins, allowing students to have some time to discuss how they are feeling, ask questions and even just having time with each other to chat. The social interactions during this time are proving to be very important as we cannot mix with our peers in person. At times we have used this check-in to run through wellbeing lessons live prompting discussion responses.

The samples of work below are examples of how students have worked through solutions to a situation they might feel stressful. Providing a solution to a chosen scenario on each petal of their flower.

Topic: Brain Breaks!

We understand that ensuring your children complete their four tasks each day, to a high standard can be a tedious process! To make your life easier, here are some fun brain break ideas to break up the day.

Brain breaks during remote learning, can help to relieve frustration. They can also help kids learn to self-regulate and self-monitor when they’re getting fed up or losing track of what they’re doing. That’s especially helpful for kids with executive functioning issues. But it’s good for all kids to know how to refresh and refocus when homework gets tough.
