Year Two News

Year Two Team: Caitlin (leader), Dan (Numeracy Co-Lead), Hayley & Troy

Hello FWPS Community,

We hope our Grade Two Families had a safe and restful break. We are very excited to be back for a big term of learning ahead! Below we have outlined our main areas of focus for this term.

Respectful Relationships

This term will see us continue our social-emotional learning to foster a safe and respectful school environment. There will be an initial focus on understanding and managing our own emotions, fears and worries. We will then shift to learning about the importance of body safety and consent.

Reading

In reading, the Grade Twos will continue to follow the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) phonics sequence. They will have regular opportunities to practise their reading through the use of decodable texts, reading and writing activities, phonemic awareness games and more. The grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) being worked on this term are:

  • Split digraphs: a-e, i-e, e-e, o-e, u-e (and alternate long vowel spellings)
  • Adjacent silent letters: kn, gn, wr, mb
  • Soft c and g sounds /s/ and /j/

Writing

We will be continuing to use our knowledge of LLLL GPCs to guide our spelling of words. We will have a large focus on narrative writing this term, giving students many opportunities to express their creativity and imagination. There will be a focus on organisation as well as word choice, voice and sentence fluency through the 6+1 Writing Traits structure.

Mathematics

During Maths sessions, students will continue to progress their numeracy skills with a focus on the following:

  • Learning vital number facts, such as friends of ten, doubles and near doubles.
  • Learning partitioning and bridging strategies to ten and beyond.
  • Recognising, naming and ordering Australian money according to value.
  • Recognising and interpreting common fractions, such as halves, quarters and eighths.
  • Telling time to the quarter-hour on both analogue and digital clocks.
  • Understanding chance outcomes through experimenting.

Science

This term, students will be learning about physical sciences through the exploration of sound. There has already been much interest in this topic among students! They will have many hands-on opportunities to create and experiment with different materials to make a variety of sounds. We will explore wonderings, such as:

  • What is sound and how is it made?
  • What kind of things can make sound and why?
  • How does sound travel?
  • Which types of materials make different types of sound and why?

Homework Students in Grade 2 will continue to bring home take home readers (LLLL decodable books) every week to practise reading and develop fluency. To support classroom learning at home, students also have an optional homework grid with tasks for literacy and mathematics that they may wish to complete.

Thank you,

The 2023 Grade Two Team
