Year 5/6 News
Welcome
It certainly is a busy time in 5/6 at the moment with much activity across the level. Overall the students are adapting well to the different routines in 5/6 and becoming more independent learners and self managers.
The fast pace continues over the coming weeks with our Year 6 students going through their final preparations for Confirmation before celebrating this important sacrament on Saturday March 19.
As part of the Confirmation preparations it was great to see the Year 6 families at our Parent Information Night. We will again be online this week for a mid term check in and encourage you all to attend. This will be an opportunity to clarify expectations and routines as well as our preferred forms of communication.
A gentle reminder that we post a weekly 'What's on for the Week' on our Google Classroom page. It is important that your child continues to check this to develop independence and organisation.
Fire Carriers Program
Our final leadership positions have now been announced with the six Year 6 Fire Carriers presented at our most recent assembly. The six students are-
Nevah O'Connor
Odessa D'Lasselle
Luke Sauro
Luca Carbone
Bianca Perri
Gabriella Gaggiano
This is a great opportunity for these students to promote reconciliation and celebrate Indigenous culture as well as driving engagement within the wider community.
Writing
During writing we have continued our approach of workshops, clinics, and explicit whole class instruction to begin a unit on narrative texts. Students have been breaking down the elements of a narrative and have begun working on describing settings and characters. We have also identified and analysed the role of a moral in a story and experimented with ways to permeate that to our audience when writing.
Maths
The year 5/6 ‘s have launched into our addition unit which builds upon our recent work in place value. Students have learnt to use and adapt strategies to solve problems with an emphasis on manipulables such as MAB. It has been pleasing to see students continue to thrive in our self directed learning environment. Although there are few expected moments where students may not be in the right place, we are seeing that students are taking on autonomous learning well and are able to organise themselves effectively.
PBL
During Problem Based Learning the students have been busy investigating the different aspects of business. They are doing this in preparation to develop their own business ideas over the next two weeks. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to express ideas and display their creativity. We are really looking forward to seeing the students navigate their way through the challenges and witnessing these ideas coming to life.
