Wondrous Wildlife from theScience Domain

Ms. Casey Irwin – Science Teacher

To conclude the Year 9 Ecology unit, Sandringham College hosted Wild Action for their Native Animals incursion. The event was an engaging and educational experience for our students, who had the opportunity to learn about our unique and diverse fauna and their important roles in our fragile ecosystems.

Students had the chance to get up close and personal with some of the weird and wonderful animals including a bettong, a joey kangaroo, a frog, a loooong python snake, a lizard, a bearded dragon, a baby crocodile, and a 50-year-old freshwater turtle. We also got to see a beautiful owl do some tricks! The students were able to touch and hold some of the animals, which allowed them to appreciate the animals' unique features and their role in our ecosystem.

Students learned about how animals have unique adaptations that help them survive in their respective ecological niches. They learned about the interdependence between different species and how disruptions to the ecosystem can have far-reaching consequences. We are grateful to the Wild Action team for providing us with this incredible opportunity and for their dedication to wildlife education and conservation.
