Green Team Newsletter!

From the Green team.

Green Team members participated in the 15th Annual School Sustainability Festival 2020 - Celebrating Youth Leadership in Climate and Biodiversity on Wednesday 18th November.

The program was hosted online this year and included presentations put together by students across the City of Port Phillip, Bayside, Stonnington and even students from the Northern Territory.

We participated in workshops, watched videos and listened to keynote speakers about environmental sustainability and how we can all take action. We learnt about bush tucker and bush medicine, the impacts of the food we consume and how to become a ‘zero waste to landfill’ school. We even went snorkelling online!

We created and presented our own video, ‘3 Simple Ways to GO GREEN and Tackle Climate Change’ which you can watch by clicking HERE. It will also be included at the next assembly. It focusses on how you can reduce your ecological footprint by loving your left overs and go nude, saying NO to fast Fashion and single use items.

Things we will take away with us…

‘I learnt about the helmeted honey eater and why it is important to keep it safe.’

Percie

‘Now I am excited to act for climate change.’  Tilly

‘Many animals are endangered because of litter and pollution. I am inspired to do a project to help the environment more here at school and at home.’

Ines

‘I enjoyed learning about fossils. You can only find fossils if you are actually looking for them.’ Nathan

‘I am wondering about the bones that Matt found. They have never been seen before and are a new species of whale or shark.’ Jessica

‘The most inspirational quote I came across was THINK GLOBAL ACT LOCAL!’

Allison

A few reminders about watching where your waste goes…

Each classroom has three main areas to put your waste into:

Landfill Waste, Organic/Compost and Recycling.

We would also like to start collecting textas and pens that do not work, bottle tops, bread tags and as well as toothpaste and toothbrushes for recycling. These items can be collected and recycled through Terracycle. A box will be available in each learning space to put these items in for recycling.

For each piece of waste we recycle, WE EARN $0.02 FOR OUR school

This doesn’t sound like much but this jar of bread tags is worth $2.50

It is completely free for us to be a part of this program, so not only do we earn a donation per piece we collect, but the WASTE WILL BE RECYCLED INSTEAD OF JUST THROWN into LANDFILL. So start collecting and bring your recyclable to school.
