Student Wellbeing

Mrs Rebecca Beveridge

What an excellent past two weeks we have had at school! We have been seeing so much resilience with lots of kids which has just been amazing! It has been so wonderful to see so many kids playing Memory Tag together and even lots of kids playing footy together at lunchtime!

PBL

Over the past two weeks of PBL, we have had a huge focus on Resilience and in particular looking at how we can bounce back from problems or when things get hard!

The F/1/2 students have been using the BOUNCE acronym to remind them of how they can Bounce Back from hard situations.

B- bad feelings always go away again

O- other people can help you feel better if you talk to them

U- unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset. Think again.

N- nobody is perfect. Mistakes help you learn.

C- concentrate on the good things and have a laugh

E- everybody feels sad and worried sometimes, not just you.

The 3-6 students have also been using this same acronym that also has BounceBack:

B- blame fairly. How much of happened was because of you, how much was because of others, and how much was because of bad luck or circumstance?

A- accept the things you can’t change but try and change the things you can first.

C- catastrophying exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture.

K- keep things in perspective, a distressing situation is only one part of your life

In class, we have been doing lots of resilience activities as well as problem solving! These are fantastic skills for children to have.

On our Behaviour Matrix we can show Resilience by:

  • Doing my best
  • Doing things to help myself
  • Bouncing Back
  • Learning from my mistakes
  • Using calming strategies

Here are some ways you can help your child at home to build problem solving skills.

Friendship Groups

This week for Friendship groups, we have been exploring 'Social Cues'. In particular, how can we use our social brains to perceive what is happening by someone's body language, situation and what is going on around them. We did lots of of talking and practised our skills by looking at some pictures and discussing what we could see and what we could do in that situation. It is really fantastic to talk about these things with kids as sometimes we just expect kids to know how to interact with other peers and teachers and adults.
