News from the Years 5-6 Classroom

History - 5/6 finished last term with the presentation of their major assessment for their unit of learning in History, ‘Gold Fever’! In this unit, students were provided with the opportunity to learn about the impact of the gold rushes, the Eureka Stockade, migration and its impact on the Australian Colonies.

To finalise their learning. Students were required to design and construct either a board game or a diorama based on, and depicting themes from the gold rushes. They had a strict criteria to follow, including:

  • A plan in the form of a picture/diagram and a short written outline of their idea.
  • Diorama/Board game showcasing relevant themes and ideas from the Gold Rush eg time and place (setting), mining techniques, people and themes eg. licensing, immigration, events eg. Eureka Stockade.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the struggles and hardships of the time that particular groups faced eg, miners, women, Chinese immigrants
  • Original and creative ideas
  • Completed in a timely and organised manner.

The students in 5/6 launched themselves into this challenge with high levels of enthusiasm and many creative ideas. They are to be congratulated for their efforts in producing some really great work, showcasing their learning. We now leave the gold rushes behind, and begin a new unit in Geography for Semester 2.

Maths - In weeks 2-4, students in 5/6 will be focusing on fractions during Maths. Although this is a topic that can be a little bit scary at times… 5/6 are preparing for success! With confident and positive attitudes, we will face: proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions and much, much more… Wish us luck!
