39 Steps to Academic Success

Okay, so 39 steps might be pushing it a bit for most, but for our Unit 3 & 4 VCE Theatre Studies students, 39 Steps was all it took to both meet a major part of their VCE assessment and to completely wow a great audience on the opening night of Patrick Barlow's 'The 39 Steps'.

It was hardly a surprise.  Sandy College has a reputation of producing incredible performances year in and year out; this was no exception. From Saber Tang's brilliant musical interpretation of the various moments and moods on stage to the comic timing of the hapless heroes Joel McNamara and Ryan Harrod, the show was a hoot from start to finish.  Costume, set, props, make-up, sound, lighting and insightful direction made for a visual feast for the theatre staved audience.  It was hard to say whether I laughed more at Ashlan Sharp's manic Sherriff, Rory Manson's Mr McGarrigle or Luka Hobbs and Imogen Fennessy as they literally smashed into each other time and time again.

I think in the end I was most impressed with the way the students answered questions about their involvement in the production, post show. Lucy Tomov and Ellen McNeale  led the way as each student contributed to the conversation. Insightful, articulate and highly considered responses shows just what an amazing job Laura Washington and the drama team do each year to support our students.

39 steps to success?  Step one is be courageous; put yourself out there with the best that you can muster.  Well done Unit 3&4 Thespians.

Time to decide...

The penultimate week in the school term will no doubt be a big one for our year 10 students:

DateEvent
June 15 & June 16In-class sessions: Introduction to the VCE/VCAL
June 17G10 Summit
June 18Individual subject selection/career interviews
June 18Subject selection portal opens - time to decide...

G10 Summit 2021

The inaugural G10 summit will happen at Holloway road on the 17th June this year.  With a focus on past, present and future it promises to be a great day for the year 10 students.  After an early breakfast, the day have an indigenous focus with digeridoo performances, a smoking ceremony, a welcome to country and a chance to learn more about the land on which we live and study. From there students will have a chance to pick and choose the activities that interest them from an amazing cartooning opportunity to the serenity of a mindful yoga session.  Students will also be given access to a range of teachers throughout the day. they will have a chance in small groups to ask anything from 'which Humanities subject should I choose?' to 'do I get to mix random substances in Chemistry?'.  Throw in some lunchtime rock n' roll, an inspiration Paralympian - Mr Don Elgin and just a little bit of Sandy magic and you have the ingredients for a great day.

Year 12 Mid-year exams

(Math & English)

On the 17th June, Unit 3 & 4 Mathematics and English exams will be held at Holloway Road. Given the difficulties faced in experiencing examination pressures in real time during 2020, we are hoping this will be an opportunity for our students to practice some of those exam skills as the real deal creeps ever closer.

VCAL...

(it's what you MOKE of it)

I had the good fortune this week to watch the year 11 VCAL students in some of their practical classes.  From podcasting to the rebuilding a Leyland Moke from scratch, it was great to see how applied the learning program can actually be.  Although the Moke has a long way to go, this amazing project is making good ground.  I am looking forward to taking the car for a spin sooner than later.  Check out the article at the end of this newsletter for more details.
