7-9 Campus News

Ms Vivienne McElwee, Head of 7-9 Campus

We all want our young people to succeed in life, whether it be at school, sport, the Arts, in friendships and in the future, be happy and successful in their chosen careers. All children have untapped talent and potential. As parents, carers and teaching professionals, it is our role to nurture these talents and passions so that our children can shine academically and socially both now and into the future.

Success reaches beyond academic results. Success encompasses the whole person, and includes their emotional intelligence, empathy for others, ability to work in a team and, eventually, their contribution to society. Research tells us that attendance also plays an importance role in student success. There is a direct correlation between poor attendance and students dropping out of secondary education in later years. I would like to encourage all families to ensure that their young person does not miss classes unnecessarily and ensure they are at school on time every day (unless unwell) and ready to learn. These are life skills that our kids must carry with them throughout their lives.

Working Bee

Thank you to all of the fabulous families who attended our working bee on Sunday April 18th. It was fantastic to see so many people there supporting our College with our beautification program in preparation for the Open Night. It certainly added the finishing touches needed to make the Bluff Rd campus really shine. Special thanks to College Principal, Amy Porter and Michelle Jeavons PTF President for helping organise the event.

Open Night

Thursday April 22nd was Open Night at Bluff Rd Campus. This is a very important annual event  for the College where prospective parents get the opportunity to tour the Campus and visit classrooms. Approximately 1300 people attended the night over two sessions, which was extraordinary. Teachers and students discussed subjects and curriculum with families who also had the opportunity to see students in action in the classroom. Thank you to all of the students, families and staff who worked so hard in the lead up to the evening and on the night to make this such a fantastic event.

Uniform

Just a reminder that all students are expected to now be in full Winter Uniform. The blazer must be worn to and from school all year round but must also be worn during class during terms 2 and 3. Students can take the blazer off during class and hang it on the back of their chair but must wear it out of class. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named. Lost property can be found in the front office. The Sport spray jacket must only be worn with the PE uniform and is not to be worn instead of the blazer.

We are soon introducing the option of a College Sport Rugby top, which should be available during semester two.  We are also looking at introducing active wear leggings as an additional sport option and will be asking focus groups for their input regarding length and style.

Naplan

Well done to all of our year 7 and 9 students for their excellent commitment to the recent NAPLAN testing. Whilst we acknowledge that this can be stressful for some, every student involved gave it their best, which is all we can ask. Whilst the data collected during these tests is useful for us to help gauge each individuals progress and growth, it can also help us as a College target any strengths and weaknesses which may need addressing. Thank you to all our amazing staff who helped with administering and organising the testing.

We are now at mid term with the end of the semester only a few weeks away. The new semester commences on June 15th, which is two weeks before the end of term. In some instances, there may be changes to electives, classes and teachers at this time.
