Term 2 has been quite busy for students studying French or Chinese, with many students taking part in the activities and events on offer. The Languages Department has also welcomed Marie Castel, a French assistant who will be working at the school for the rest of the year. She is primarily working with our VCE French students to give them extra assistance in preparing for their end of year speaking exam but has been able to attend some of our other French classes too.

Year 10 Chinese students were involved in a video call with students also studying Chinese at Officer Secondary College. All students introduced themselves, asked and answered questions about each other in Chinese and also completed role play activities which linked to learning of the health topic this term. The Year 10s really enjoyed the session and found it useful in speaking Chinese to communicate with students in a different school.

The pen pal letters written by our French students arrived in France early this term and we have received our second set of letters – much to the delight of the students taking part! Sandringham students will be able to write their responses before the end of Term 2 to be sent back to France to continue the pen pal exchange.

Congratulations to the 20 students across Years 7-10 who took part in the annual Berthe Mouchette poetry competition, organised by the Alliance Française. It was amazing to see the effort that students put in to learning and reciting their poem. Students should receive their results in July.

On the Bluff Road Campus, Languages teachers organised some lunchtime cooking sessions which were very popular. The Chinese students made dumplings and the French students made crêpes. Thanks to all the Languages and Food Technology teachers and assistants for their help in ensuring each session ran smoothly.
